Are you a nonbeliever? Do you also love music? You probably didn’t know it, but Spoonboy is about to blow your mind.
Underground singer/songwriter David Combs records his solo work under the Spoonboy moniker. Despite, or perhaps because of, his youth, Spoonboy’s socially conscious songs remain energetic and urgent. He might not have meant to do it, but he wrote one of the greatest Atheist anthems of all time, What You Want, from his solo debut album ‘I Love You This Is A Robbery’. I highly recommend the whole album, but that song really nails it for the nonreligious audience. David has just re-recorded this song (with a plug for Rock Beyond Belief in the beginning!) so it finally gets justice on YouTube.
Spoonboy – What You Want
David was amongst the first musicians to join the lineup, taking the plunge a lot earlier than most. He really gets what we are trying to do here. It’s probably not easy to emerge from the political DIY punk scene with an acoustic guitar, playing to a crowd of thousands on a military base. But he was down with Rock Beyond Belief before we even had a real momentum going, even offering to sleep on my couch to cut down on expenses.
Amazingly, he recorded another video for us, Do You Need A Messiah.
I like the minute or so he spends to explain his inspiration, and then just launches right into it. I have a feeling that he is about to turn on a whole new demographic to his music, the atheist crowd. Somehow he has passed under their radar this long. Understandably people have different tastes, but Spoonboy’s catchy music and intelligent lyrical content will play extremely well at the festival this Spring.
If you want to get ahead of the curve, check out his music now on the official Spoonboy website. A supreme miscarriage of justice finds his brilliant 2004 debut album, I Love You This Is A Robbery out of print. There are ways to obtain his music, and I recommend contacting him to find out. Stay tuned for an update to this cruel situation.
