Happy Mother’s Day, hope you like military-grade FAIL

An anonymous foxhole atheist at Fort Jackson sent me this.

If you seek it out, remember do not start flame wars, and always be respectful. Don’t feed any trolls that may pop up. I’m going to Fort Jackson in a few weeks – trying to keep pitchforks and torches out of this.

If you must, leave your comment on the post itself. Don’t click on the picture to leave a comment. The picture is secular and comes from some other unit that didn’t say anything about god – you’d be speaking to the wrong people.

This is what I wrote:

I like the picture a lot. Happy mother’s day to my wife! It’s the very first one that I’ve been back from deployment. However, it’s worth pointing out that when your message says “Military Mothers are proof that God Blesses America!” it doesn’t make sense.

There were/are military mothers supporting (often even serving in) the armies of the other nations that we’ve fought *against* too. That wasn’t exactly proof that God Blessed their nations too, now was it?

I’d prefer if you leave god out of mother’s day. If you insist, at least make sense! The picture was fine on its own.

It’s fine to sit this one out and just not comment. They have a surprisingly low number of ‘fans’ for a garrison level Facebook page. No need for the full fire-hose effect this time around.

Weird stuff… Happy Mother’s Day!

It is just sickening how theists can take such a beautiful message and put their religious spin on it and then try to force it down everyone’s throat.

If the creator of that sentiment is correct, then god blesses Canada too. Or at least 1 of my grandmothers, my mom, and 3 of my aunts would think so. I would dare arue with any of them on any day of the year.

I’ve had a problem with ceremonially deistic phrases like that mainly because I can understand the sentiment behind the notion of “God Bless America”, but don’t really go along with the whole ‘bronze-age tribal deity/deity’s angsty kid/ghost who is not patrick swayze expressing special preference to a chunk of rock that some people drew imaginary lines around’ thing.

I don’t always buy that the ‘God’ parts don’t count “chiefly because they have lost through rote repetition any significant religious content” (Lynch v. Donnelly, 465 U.S. 668), especially when such phrases are used deliberately by Christians to exclude everybody who isn’t in their group.

Most people I know who use that phrase mean it as a general expression of patriotic goodwill and not as a specifically religious statement.

It seems like a good way to approach this specific incident would be to point out an alternative phrase that expresses the same emotions and desire for good, while leaving out all the silliness of a magic 3-for-one deity.

Any thoughts on what could be a good secular equivalent of that phrase? I can think of no better place to ask than here, and no better group of people to ask than those who put their blood on the line for the USA.

Looks like they’ve removed the post, and substituted a plain “Happy Mother’s Day” and a photo of roses.

    Good work!

To Post #4, how about simply:

“Military mothers are proof that America rocks!”

I think it makes largely the same point, while remaining 100% secular (unless you worship music, of course).

  • The picture appears to be gone. Also, they seem to have blocked the link from this page.

Sweet. Fixing this is as easy saying something. They did the right thing. Good job Fort Jackson!

  • Good point Patrick!I’ll have to try some of these for my subject lines as well ….Cheers,

  • This is the exact Happy Mother’s Day, hope you like military-grade FAIL blog for anyone who wants to attempt out out nearly this message. You remark so overmuch its almost wearing to debate with you (not that I rattling would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new twisting on a message thats been typewritten around for geezerhood. Precise shove, but majuscule!

  • Great post however I was wanting to know if you could write a litte more on this topic? I’d be very thankful if you could elaborate a little bit more. Cheers!
