Atheists distrusted by 97% of the population

As reported at Pharyngula:

From a telephone sampling of more than 2,000 households, university researchers found that Americans rate atheists below Muslims, recent immigrants, gays and lesbians and other minority groups in “sharing their vision of American society.” Atheists are also the minority group most Americans are least willing to allow their children to marry.

This comes from a study done at the University of Minnesota.

This is odd, considering that atheists are more than 3% of the population. Are we self-hating atheists, now?

  • Jim Lippard

Actually, the 97% figure came from another blog post about this study. The study says that about 3% of the population are atheists; that’s probably where that blog post derived the 97%.

A more accurate title would have been “Atheists most-distrusted U.S. minority.”

The good ole US of A – freedom of religion, as long as you definitely choose a religion. If you refuse to believe in a mythical god, you’re obviously not trustworthy.

I posted on this story also, under the title We’ve Got Work to Do. Personally, I think these findings are discouraging, but not terribly so; I strongly suspect most people don’t know any real atheists and are just relying on what their preachers have told them. If we speak out and combat those stereotypes, there is reason to hope that they will fade away with relatively little fuss.
