The E-Word In Arkansas

“I am instructed NOT to use hard numbers when telling kids how old rocks are,” says an Arkansas geologist and science teacher. “I am supposed to say that these rocks are VERY VERY OLD … but I am NOT to say that these rocks are thought to be about 300 million years old.” That and many other absurdities as reported by the Arkansas Times. The Times also reports that “several Arkansas public school districts” have intentionally crippled their science education and have purged the e-word “evolution” from their vocabulary. So these fifth-grade kids are growing up without a real science education. The Soviet Union set itself back decades with its fetish for Lysenkoism, which subverted genetics via political propaganda. It looks like here in the U.S. we’re continuing to subvert science education via religious propaganda — and our children are the real losers.

It isn’t just children who are the real losers, it’s the future of the US as a whole. The more extremist religious ideologies demand the castration of science education, the more America will fall behind as a global power. The US is currently near the bottom of the top 21 industrialized nations in both math and science education. (This has been the case since before the current administration, but has most certainly not improved under it.) The worse this gets, the more other nations like China, Russia, and Korea will leap ahead of us in important technological developments. Given that we’re already the biggest debtor nation on Earth, to sink even farther into dependence on other countries to provide basic needs to our citizens will be devastating. Unless things change — and under the Bush regime, pandering to Dominionists, they quite simply will not — the American Century will be well and truly over.
