Teen Spirit

Teenagers abandoning evangelical churches in droves? So say many church leaders according to the New York Times. For those outside the subscription wall, here’s the money quote:

“I’m looking at the data,” said Ron Luce, who organized the meetings and founded Teen Mania, a 20-year-old youth ministry, “and we’ve become post-Christian America, like post-Christian Europe. We’ve been working as hard as we know how to work — everyone in youth ministry is working hard — but we’re losing.”

I got the impression from that article that the 4 percent figure comes from questionable science.

I found the part about the teen revival interesting, however. The kids promised to renounce all kinds of trashy popular culture in favor of equally dubious christian culture, apparently because they don’t know of any alternative. This suggests that if they had access to better secular culture, they wouldn’t feel the need to make a false choice between Jesus and celebrities as role models.
