Speaking in Seattle on Saturday

imageI will be reprising my recent talk to the Central London Humanists, “Evidence About God: What Apologists Don’t Want You to Know,” but this time my audience will be the Creation Association of Puget Sound (CAPS).

When: Saturday, May 11, 2013, 7:00PM

Where: Avondale Bible Church, 17010 Avondale Road Northeast, Woodinville, WA

Here is information from the organizer:

Refreshments and meetup discussions at 7:00, talk at 7:30, hosted by Avondale Bible Church. This meeting is organized for Christians to politely hear from the Skeptic community and respond at the end during the Q & A – but this is not a debate. The Creation Association of Puget Sound is returning the favor of Seattle Skeptics, who have provided forums for Creationists and Intelligent Design proponents to speak at their gatherings with Q & A by skeptics. Similarly Skeptics are encouraged to come observe, but not to participate in the Q & A. This meeting will open with scripture and Creation & I.D. announcements.

To RSVP, you may sign up on Meetup.com, where it has been cross-promoted by Seattle Atheists.

Jeff, Glad to see you’re still so active. Hope there’s another book you’re planning on writing or editing. At your talk please say Hi to Jonathan McLatchie for me if you happen to meet him since he mentioned possibly attending. He’s an intern this year at the DI and we met via Facebook. For instance he posted on the I.D. blog the biogeographical evidence in Jerry Coyne’s book did not look good for evolution, and I responded on my blog (Coyne praised my response in a private email).

And Jeff, I noticed you don’t do podcasts. You should. There’s loads of different podcast channels that Price and Carrier have appeared on, as well as scholars speaking about all the questions involved in biblical studies like Mark Goodacre’s NTPod series, and a new series on “apocalyptic” on the podcast, Religions of the Ancient Mediterranean, and I loaded them all onto my ipad recently. Beats listening to the radio. I’m also toying with composing a book either alone or with others on today’s Christian apologists and their arguments.

One more thing, I remember the good old days, 10-15 years ago, when there were private email lists run by separate organizations (the I.D.ists had their own, as did the evolutionists) and much less face to face discussion and debate. Today debates are all the rage. Including Christians debating Christians in whole series of books (the viewpoints series) published by Christian publishing houses, several of them. And private email lists, like private diaries, are a thing of the past. No more secrets. Instead people are putting everything, all their research, ideas, interests, arguments, online for public viewing, or putting it on facebook, or forums or blogs. Science magazines are instantly delivering the latest discoveries at their online outlets. Everyone has a podcast, youtube channel, twitter account. Do Christians imagine they are going to herd the six billion cats of humanity back into dogmatic line? I think the possibility of that happening is lower than ever before.

any possibility that the talk would be recorded i am really really looking for more of your content apart from this blog and your debate. i wish if people like you could represent atheism in public more often then say lawrence krauss or richard dawkins.(not that i have anything against them they have done great job but philosophical atheism needs its public champions too)

Arif — Thank you very much for your comment. The event was not recorded, but I will surely be doing this presentation again in the future and maybe we can get it recorded and posted on YouTube.

I don’t know where you are located, but perhaps you could work with a local group and get me invited as a guest speaker, if they are willing to pay travel expenses.

    Great presentation Jeff!

It was good to finally meet you in person.

Judging from the ‘questions’ you received, I don’t think the audience had an

appreciation for the intellectual banquet that you provided for them.

But it was refreshing to hear an atheist speaking clearly and cogently in defense of Naturalism in the Avondale Bible Church.

Thanks, Bradley. It was good to finally meet you in person also.

I no longer remember what they were, but I think there were a couple of questions that I thought at the time were especially good.
