Craig-Carroll Debate

I missed the opening statements, but watched the rest of the debate live. Based on what I saw, Carroll did as well in his debate with Craig as Shelley Kagan did in his. Off the top of my head, this is the best debate performance I have ever seen by an atheist scientist.

I’ve always been very impressed with Carroll and I think that he’s far and away the best atheist-with-science-background-who-publicly-defends-atheism (not as uselessly specific a category as you might think: there are a lot of people who roughly fit that description and are pretty embarrassingly bad at what they do).

It’s worth seeing if we can learn a few lessons from this. What is it that gives Carroll his edge? The right combination of scientific and philosophical literacy, perhaps?

That’s exactly what gives Carroll his edge! He is not a “philosophy denier”!

I haven’t gathered my thoughts on the debate yet but was rather perturbed that Carroll rather condescendingly suggests that religious (Christian) people embrace the emotional connection with others that religion provides, and leave the facts to the secularists. But then, Carroll offered a great compliment saying if he were a theist, he would want to be like Craig, who embraces and explores a full-orbed worldview – one that engages all the disciplines and data. That was the highpoint in the debate!

Kevin — Interesting. I don’t remember Carroll suggesting that, but that doesn’t mean you’re wrong.

It’s almost as if the following day the “Theist team” decided to be as inaccessible and jargon-heavy as possible. Meanwhile the “Atheist team” decided to as off topic as possible. Ugh, it was a rough second day…
