People hurt as mad evangelist causes panic in a US cinema April 30, 2018

Michael Ray Webber, inset, a preacher with an outfit called Truth and Triumph Ministries, was arrested after he caused a stampede at a California cinema complex.
At the end of a screening of the latest Avengers movie – Avengers: Infinity War – Webber, according to this report, stood up and started yelling, causing panic among members of the audience.
Susie Arias told CBS2 News:

I think when he said, ‘If you were to die tonight, would your passage to heaven be guaranteed?’ — something along those lines — I think that’s when people started panicking.

Arias said she and her partner were able to walk out, but they said people behind them started running and pushing in an effort to exit quickly.

That’s when the kind of chaos happened in the little exit, where people were jumping over the railings, and kind of falling over, twisting their ankles and hitting their head.

In footage taken immediately after the incident, a man can be seen limping out of the theater. Police said a woman hit her head and had to be hospitalised.

Webber pictured with someone called Mariah on the website of Truth and Triumph Ministries, which offers ‘soul winning tools’.
The 28-year-old lunatic told CBS2 via phone that he’s preached at the theatre before with no problems.

Last night was an anomaly. The lights did not turn up for quite a few minutes, and so I really couldn’t see anyone’s reaction except those of the people just right around me.

He added he didn’t know the people in the theater couldn’t see he had his hands up, showing he did not have a weapon.

It’s extremely unfortunate that anyone sustained injuries because of this. Again, I was unarmed.

Arias believes that people panicked because of past terrorist attacks such as the shooting at a theater in Aurora, Colorado in 2012. She said she hopes that Webber realises the fear he caused in others.

If you’re gonna try to draw people towards the Bible, that’s not the way to do it, and he needs to stop.

Webber has been charged with a misdemeanor. He told CBS2 this will not deter his evangelising, but he might reconsider his locations.

    ‘…he might reconsider his locations.’
How about in church, which is where people go if they want to hear preaching? People go to the cinema to watch movies, not to have some deranged idiot start ranting on at them about his special friend in the sky.

Total Arse. Needs a good smacking.

  • Italian Scallion

Since he caused so much harm to people, he should have been arrested and thrown in jail. See if your make believe daddy in the sky helps you out.

I’m surprised that given the USA’s obsession with guns that somebody did’t shoot him, mistaking him for a terrorist. Also, this idiot reminds me of Jasper Carrot’s sketch, Nutter on the bus “Anyone seen my Camel?”

I like the golden rule, since he caused harm to others he wishes that to be done to him so hurt him as the others were hurt then send him to the hospital so he can get good treatment and be in pain for some time.. the more pain the better!

  • So, no heartfelt contrition, he just thinks it “unfortunate” that people were injured as a result of his selfish, stupid and eccentric behaviour. Sums up the arrogance of many self-styled preachers. Does he even read the news and know that the next random massacre by religious fanatics in the Western World is now only ever weeks or months away? I’d bet dollars to doughnuts that most public evangelising does far more to damage the image of religion than make it look like life-enriching.

” first, in the Inland Empire of Southern California, and then abroad. ”
That’s classy. Is there an Outer Empire? Do Californians know they are living in an Empire? Has it anything to do with Star Trek? He is lost in his world of fantasy.

“Soul-winning tools”, indeed. He’s an a**ehole winning tool if ever I saw one.

Broga, the area referred to has been known as the Inland Empire for over a century. Before that it was called the Orange Empire due to the abundance of citrus fruit grown there.

remigius: Many thanks. Sounds good. I’m afraid I’m a bit insular.

I think taxonomists should take note of news like this and the Christian hysteria of Alfie’s Army when they want to name our species. They have the temerity to call ALL humans Homo Sapiens (!!!).
The US is such a strange creature. One of the most advanced countries on the planet somehow manages to have one of the most ignorant/religious public in existence.

@Angela K – yet even Jasper Carrot felt compelled to ask God to stop the bus nutter from sitting next to him. Unsurprisingly his prayers went unanswered.

Astonishing how easily people get panicked here in the “home of the brave and the land of the free”. London 1940 it ain’t. These are not the kind of people who should be allowed to have firearms. Nor are they the kind of people for whom the second amendment was written.

Meanwhile in the UK we are still letting the pious get their way and allow people to suffer like this …

It strikes me that he’s right on the cusp of legal free speech, quite literally just shy of shouting “Fire!” in a crowded theatre.
