Komen Foundation Backs Down And Apologises To Planned Parenthood

From NPR: Komen Foundation Now Says It Will Continue Grants To Planned Parenthood:

The Susan G. Komen Foundation just announced it will be providing grants to Planned Parenthood for that organization to use in basic screening and educating women about breast cancer.

…In the statement from CEO Nancy Brinker, Komen also says “we want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women’s lives.”

Thanks to Ben Radford and Julia Lavarnway for the news! Despite the fact that it may very well mean that they may change their mind about applications for grants in the future…

Now both sides of the political spectrum will hate them!

  • The Lorax

Apologies and fixing mistakes are always good, but you know, the fact that it happened says something. I remain curious about why they made the decision in the first place.

  • ashleybone

I saw no intent to do anything other than slither out of the controversy in their statement. Given their new stem-cell research policy and the pinkwashed handgun, I tend to believe they haven’t changed course at all.

  • Randomfactor

I tend to believe that, ashleybone, because the only thing they’ve changed is their excuse.

A lot of media people (none of them journalists) and a lot of bloggers seem to have fallen for Komen’s line of PR bullshit. They’ve cut off Planned Parenthood and have no intention of reversing that.

I feel the same way about any products carrying SGK’s phony pink ribbon.

But yes, one GOOD outcome of this is that the idiots hating Planned Parenthood for religious reasons now ALSO think SGK is a backstabbing bunch of hypocrites. May be the first time I’ve agreed with them.

  • ‘Tis Himself, OM

Komen will continue the 2012 grants to Planned Parenthood. Afterwards PP will be allowed to apply for new grants. There’s actually nothing positive there. Komen signed contracts with PP so they have to continue paying the present grants. Afterwards, with Karen Handel as Senior Vice President for Public Policy, the chances of PP getting a Komen grant are between slim and none.

The latest statement from Komen is probably the best the spin meisters could do.
