FWIW, I live in the former range of mammoths and mastodons, and their ecosystem is far from extinct. Our forests may look lush and green, but they’re actually unhealthy, choked with fast-growing weedy trees and shrubs like osage orange and black locust — prime elephant fodder. Slow-growing canopy trees like beech can’t get a start, there’s increased chance of devastating fires, etc. etc.

It’s actually been proposed to introduce modern Asian elephants into the forests of the Ohio Valley to improve the health of the forest.

If they ever do clone mammoths, hopefully they can let a herd loose in Big Bone Lick and restore the ecosystem to some kind of balance.

      I. Am. So. Signing. On. For. Mammoth. Tourism. if they do that!

Or if they let elephants into the Ohio Valley. That’d be one photo op not to miss!
