Catholics, Stop Staring At the Sun

get-a-brain-moransNearly 50 people in India have lost their sight after staring at the sun, looking for a vision of the Virgin Mary.

The health department has now put up a signboard at the hotelier’s house near Erumeli, where the divine image is said to have appeared, warning people against exposing their eyes to sunlight.

This must be some kind of joke on stupid people:

“Hey guys, guess what? The Virgin Mary has appeared in the sun!”
“Uhhhh… I don’t see it.”
“Keep looking. Like for a very long time.”

Thankfully for them, it is unlikely the damage is permanent, since looking at the sun rarely makes a person permanently blind.

Update: I love Roger’s comment: “So now they’ve got blind faith?”

Ah the beauty of having so much faith.

  • Kodie

Why would this happen? It’s like they have so much faith, but they have to see it with their own eyes. One or the other, people.

    • Daniel Florien

Good point. If it appeared to our senses, it wouldn’t take faith, would it?

that does sound like a bit of snark gone horribly awry.

  • Roger

So now, they’ve got blind faith?

Any particular reason for linking a news item from February 2008?

    • Daniel Florien

I missed the date. But I still like the story, because it’s funny. :)

Yes, if it’s too ancient, or not ancient enough, it’s not relevant.

It would be safer just to go to a Mexican resturant and stare at the grill.

    • Reginald Selkirk

Yes, let’s all go Mexican for lunch.

      • Nathan

        I’m having Mexican right now!

Reminds me of that one song by the Offspring. Goes something like…

So forgive me, but I won’t be frustrated
    By destruction in your eyes
As you’re starin’ at the sun

She also appears on the belly of sharks. So, if you want to save your eyes, just go for a swim!

Yeah, I realized when reading about the “Miracles of the Sun” that have appeared at various Marian appearances that mos of it is just retinal damage and sun dogs.
