Back in (I think) 2007, John Sweeney travelled to the US for the BBC and made a documentary about the Cult Church of Scientology. It culminated in this very well publicised rant:
John Sweeney has now returned to the US and made a follow-up program – but this time some of the Scientologists who he met the first time have since left the Cult Church and have apparently been quite upfront about how they stitched him up the first time.
The program airs on Tuesday 28th September at 21:00 BST, so should be available to view on BBC iPlayer by about 22:30 BST. Get yourself a UK based VPN server and have a watch, it should be a hoot!

Translation please, I have a hard time understanding the language of Scream.
“YOU SHALL NOT PAAAAAASSSSSS!”
He should have kept the beard and the stick.
Unfortunately the CoS edited this quite heavily before they publicised it, so context is quite difficult! As far as I can tell, he says:
But I could be wrong….
I “get” why he’s screaming. He’s screaming over Scientologists who like to talk over people who disagree with or question them. You know the ones: “What are your crimes? What are you afraid of?”

I don’t think Sweeney lost his marbles, or anything like that. I think the screaming is giving them a taste of their own medicine, that’s all.
I think I should have focused this entry better; I didn’t really want the rant to be the point so much as the program that’s airing on Tuesday.
Oops! Right, then!
Ya, it’s all out of context for me Custy. I had no idea who Sweeny was, and made the assumption that he was stark raving mad. I had to go look him up to realize that he and I are on the same team. Ill be interested in seeing the show.
I have to second that. Didn’t get what the video was all about and who they screaming guys was though the name Sweeny rung a bell.
Christine– I could only watch a few minutes of that vid before I started getting pissed off. It shows just how desperate believers are to defend their version of “truth”. Their lives are so pathetically sad that they have to cling to some organizing principle, no matter how silly or ridiculous, to justify going on. What does that tell you about the lives that people are living on this planet?
It tells me that things are so bad and that there is so much suffering that people will do *anything* to find “relief”. I suppose self-delusion is just one more way that people self medicate. Religion is a drug just like any other. It may make you feel better in the short term, but in the long term, it poisons and destroys.
The world will be a better place when we stop deluding ourselves about suffering and start doing something rational about it.
Case in point… Why the recent (well, since the 1990′s anyway) explosion in religious nuttery???

Uncertain times make for people desperate for “order”.
spot on
Gotta hand it to him, that’s a mighty impressive set of pipes he has there.

Like.
Why hasn’t this been autotuned yet? “No listen to me” has such a great tune to it.
Just sent it to bartbaker, the guy that makes a lot of them(he made the “dude you have no quran” one.
Hehehe! If he makes one, email it to me and I’ll post it to the blog :-)
I’m so relieved to see that the art of polite, reasoned discourse is not dead.
