Rock the Bible Belt

While you weren’t looking, Rock Beyond Belief went from being a scrappy underdog to being potentially one of the biggest freethought events in the country.

Granted, everything is still up in the air, since Justin and crew need to get all the paperwork done so they can set a date. But look at the line-up of folks who have agreed to speak:

Eugenie Scott, executive director of the National Center for Science Education
Margaret Downey, former president of Atheist Alliance International and founder of the Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia
Mikey Weinstein, founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation

Ed Brayton of Dispatches from the Culture Wars
Jen McCreight of Blag Hag
Hemant Mehta of Friendly Atheist

Richard Dawkins. Heard of him?

And many more. All of these will be descending on Ft. Bragg … which, unless they’ve moved it recently, is in Fayetteville, North Carolina … ummm …

Folks, this is Fayetteville, NC:

(via American Jesus)

Self-righteous evangelicals pestering the women at a Hooters restaurant, and doing a bad job of it.

I hope the sudden influx of freethought doesn’t break the city.

I loved living in North Carolina, except for this kind of crap at the Hooters. I’d like to go to this event Justin is organizing, but my partner has made it clear that she isn’t interested in any type of secular / skeptical / atheist events (I missed out on a talk at CFI and skeptic bowling in a church basement last week). If I go alone it will likely put a ton of stress on the relationship, and it doesn’t need that.

  • nazani14

Of all the sleazy dives and massage parlors in Fayette-Nam, they pick a Hooters?

    • Len

Well, if they pick one of the sleazy dives or massage parlours you mention (or the topless bars mentioned below), then they’d probably wake up in an alley. And you don’t want to think about where that camera would be.

  • japanther

Thanks for all the kind words and support over here at UF. We need it, trust me.

We’re still working out some kinks with the date, as we are starting to feel some resistance and military-related difficulties. I should be able to announce a lot more on this front in the next week or two. (finally) But don’t worry, we are confident that we can pull this off and make it happen.

By the way, we’ve held atheist meet ups in THAT SAME HOOTERS lol. On Sunday, no less. If any fayetteville atheists (civilian or military) are out there reading this, please join our new meetup group.

You’ll have to settle for cybersupport, dude. I’m seven hundred miles away.

      • japanther

I actually do need cyber support. No joke. I need help defeating religious trolls that spread misinformation in certain spots. If anyone out there wants to help, and has 5 minutes per week to spare, fill out the contact form and ‘volunteer to join the e team’. Seriously, not time consuming. Haha, I’m being such a media whore (that phrase was voted ‘safe’ right?)

        • UrsaMinor

So what’s your strategy? Comment wars on blogs rarely help in my experience. Or are you talking about something else?

Moderators: I am not able to log in on the forums this afternoon.
[LMNOP: I just checked your forum profile, and it seems to be intact. The thing's been getting a little wonky lately. Give it another shot in about an hour and see if the hiccup clears.]

          • LRA

            That happened to me!

You may have to reset your password…

            • Elemenope

Yep, if worst comes to worst.

          • japanther

Nah, nothing like that. I’d prefer not to talk about it on an open forum (: Too easy though, I promise.

  • mikespeir

I noticed that they didn’t get anybody saved. But they planted the seed. You can be sure that righteousness is going to break out all over the place eventually.

    • drax

I once had an outbreak of righteousness, but I saw a Dr. and got rid of it.

      • mikespeir

Thank Go– uh, goodness it’s curable, huh?

        • drax

          yes, thank goodness.

  • MahouSniper

I would love to go to this. Maybe I’ll see if I can get a road trip down there…

Anyone in Cleveland up for a road trip?

    • drax

You might be able to talk me into it, if you don’t mind swinging through WNY first. I know it will add some hours to the trip, but I’d be willing to do most of the driving.

  • Gringa

About the Hooters girls… that is their uniform. Shouldn’t those guys take their gripes up with the owners of the restaurant? Or perhaps the nation-wide chain? Or are they just incapable of seeing the bigger picture around the things they protest? (that last question is sarcastic)

    • nazani14

It will be interesting to see if lesbian soldiers (there are plenty at Bragg) will patronize Hooters once SWOG (serving while openly gay) becomes established. I don’t think these preachers want to meet the Airborne and Air Assault lasses in a dark parking lot.

    • Yoav

It’s just the standard fundie misogyny. Any woman who doesn’t dress “modestly” or is working instead of staying at home like a good submissive wife, serving her husband and popping babies, is by definition an amoral whore who is going to burn in hell. The last few centuries of changes in gender roles (and pretty much everything else) just past these Aholes by while they were busy praying for their invisible sky daddy.

      • Gringa

Right. How silly of me to forget that by dressing that way, they are tempting good christian men who of course cannot control themselves, and therefore it is the woman’s fault.

  • japanther

Actually that Hooters is RIGHT by several topless bars.

Fayetteville: Used car rip-off lots, Churches, Topless Bars. Pretty much all you get. Hooters probably has the moral high ground here.

    • Trucker Doug

That’s what you get right next to any big military base. This could have been filmed on Victory Drive outside Fort Benning.

    • drax

Sounds like Jacksonville, NC circa 1989.

  • Aimster

    “Support my ministry!”

Did that guy with the busted shoes REALLY just pan-handle for “ministry” donations that would be used for his own personal clothing needs? Nice…True Christianity at it’s finest and most self-indulgent.

  • Billy

I live in this area, it really is that bad. I’m excited about the event though man, it’s what this area needs!

    • japanther

If you want to help out with the set up day before / day of, we need a few more volunteers… I’m just sayin (:

      *end media whoring*

      • Yoav

Depends on when the final date will be, I may be able to help out. You can find me through the triangle meetup group.

        • japanther

          TAM or TFS?

          • Yoav

TAM, I use the same user name.
