Love me some good Twain. Is anyone else reading his new autobiography? My wife bought it for me for Christmas last year. What an amazing life.

Good thing ‘religion’ (in its culturally understood context) is not the true offer, not even close! Jesus said as much, was always at odds with the religious types…and still is, bringing them UP & OUT (of its oppressive bondage) and IN to Him, into His (kind & quality) of (abundant) Life! All the best UF.

    • Michael says:

“The true offer” of what? What makes you think this was even about Jesus in any way?

      • trj says:

The true offer of Truth. And of Jesus bringing people UP and OUT and IN as they grow DOWN.

        It’s perfectly simple.

I’d hate to be labeled as anti-semantic, but I hate these word games.

        OOh, my faith isn’t a religion, it’s a relationship!!

Ya, well my dog isn’t a dog, shes a supermodel. And my nissan pickup truck isnt a truck, its a Ferrari. So now I live with a supermodel and drive a Ferrari, because I say so.

Sorry JohnC, you’re obviously operating on a completely different definition of ‘religion’ that most sane people use. Changing the definition doesn’t change what you have, which is a religion. Don’t feel bad tho’. If you want to, Ill let you pet my supermodel and take you for a ride in my Ferrari if you like.

        • John C says:

There is (still) no light in unbelief Revy. As long as you insist on trying to see with your own (dim) light (like I’ve said, my own light is dim too, as the moon to the sun) you will not see in the light of truth. Its impossible friend. Its called pride and it keeps you at a distance from the Truth. But thankfully, there is a Light that is offered to you by which you may see clearly, Ps 36:9.

Humble yourself friend. You”ll be amazed how it improves one’s ‘I’sight. All the very best sir.

A comforting interpretation John. I can understand why one wishes to hold it.

  4. Verimius says:

Did Mark Twain actually say or write that? So many quotes — in fact I’d say the majority — are misattributed or misstated, especially Mark Twain.

After the Orange County debacle, http://www.ocregister.com/articles/jefferson-323913-quote-one.html, we’d better be careful about quotations.

Don’t publicize a quote until you have the exact source.

    • grumpygirl says:

That is true. I can’t find any Mark Twain quotation sites attributing it to him.
I find, “The first priest was the first rogue who met the first fool”, being attributed to both Carl Sagan and Voltaire. It may have even been much earlier, in Chaucer.

      • Elemenope says:

Will Durant’s “The Story of Philosophy” firmly cites it as Voltaire’s. This he sources to Voltaire’s “selected works” [so very helpful as that title is], pg. 63.

    • Noelle says:

Are you suggesting reports of Twain’s quotes have been greatly exaggerated?

  5. RickRay1 says:

Doesn’t matter whose quote it is, it’s still the truth, according to Mr. Reason.

  6. vasaroti says:

I would guess that religion arose out of some confusion about correlation and causation, combined with confusion about what is alive (people, animals) with what is not (fire, lightning.).
