Old Jokes and New Outrage

Here’s the latest Red Bull commercial, which plays on some old jokes and wedges their slogan in the middle:

This has sparked some pavlovian outrage. From the Times Live:

The advert, flighted on Monday night during e.tv’s 7pm news and during the popular Grey’s Anatomy drama series on M-Net, has prompted more than 100 complaints in less than a day.

While no official response from Red Bull was received, a staff member said yesterday the offending advert had been pulled from the air.

Who didn’t see the outrage coming? Maybe Red Bull put the ad up knowing it would cause trouble and get some free marketing out of it.

      Yop.
Riding the Streisand Effect and with a certain flair. Oo

  • Gordon

People got outraged by that? Seriously?

    • FO

People got outraged by a bus ad that simply red “Atheists!”

    • UrsaMinor

It’s considered terribly impolite in some circles to point out that not everyone takes your particular brand of religion seriously, even though this is demonstrably true for all religions.

Well, at least it’s phoning in to a complaint hotline and not, you know, stabbing cartoonists in the street or stalking their children at preschool.

It just occurred to me that but for the matter of degree, there is scant different.

    • Noelle

I wonder if complaining gets you coupons for free Red Bull?

  • zach

    hahaha I love it.

Hey, if I believed the bible to be literally true I would be very upset. We were supposedly cast out of the Garden of Eden because a couple shared an apple. This would seem much more offensive to an obviously psychotic all powerful rage-aholic like the biblical god. Plus Red Bull clearly is only a cleverly disquised golden calf for the worship of Ba’al

    • http://theotherweirdo.wordpress.com The Other Weirdo

Hey, don’t knock Ba’al. He was the only one to survive when the Replicators attacked the galaxy.

The sooner Christians realize the real history of their religion; that it’s ideologies and myths were plagiarized/stolen from pagan beliefs long before Christianity came into being, the sooner they’ll get over the fact there is no magic Jeebus/God.
Not even one that walks on stones!

    • John C

Oh how your tune will change one day, silly Ray. Then you’ll think FSM, Foolish Senseless Me! How did I ever dis-believe in Love?? Then you’ll see what you never knew, that even though you didn’t Him, He still loved you.

      • TrickQuestion

        Now that’s just creepy.

      • Anonymous-Sam

Triumphalism doesn’t become you, John. It’s one of the ugliest of Christian expressions. “Oh, how you’ll get yours! And I’ll be laughing all the way to Heaven while you’re in agonizing pain for all eternity!”

Guess what? If you’re right and there is a Hell, you’ll be right there alongside us to enjoy it. Saying the magic words doesn’t make you exempt, it just makes you a hypocrite.

        • John C

I never said one word about hell, Sam. You know what they say about ‘assuming’, right? Yes, Love wins out.

          Thankfully.

          • Kodie

Nobody cares about your hallucinations anymore.

          • Johan

Your behavior is still abhorrent. You aren’t denying the behavior anyhow, just changing the subject. That shows that at least on some level you understand that your behavior is plain wrong.

      • Mark Joseph

Hey, good ol’ John, the love drug, is back. How’s it goin’, dude? Love your schtick, man, but c’mon bro–FSM isn’t “Foolish Senseless Me,” or even “Fo’ Sho’ Mushrooms” (I been in this field of poppies for a long time…), but rather “Flying Spaghetti Monster.” He is da man, and I hope he drops a double scoop of marinara on your plate. Keep cool, but don’t freeze, and remember, absence of evidence is evidence of insanity. Ciao.

    • Paul

Its got to be tough to believe in the face of truth, but they do and the evidence otherwise is of course just the devil working his evilness, trying to get them to deny their faith. But of course there will come another discovery that bothers them more so they will edit their faith so that it accepts evolution or whatever their current anti-science rhetoric proclaims. It’s happened so many times that they will seamlessly rewite dogma and claim that it is proof of god.

This actually makes me want to buy Red Bull for the first time in my life.
