A Sword in a Field

The Messenger: The Story of Joan of Arc received poor reviews, both for its heavy-handed presentation and it mediocre acting. Dustin Hoffman does turn in a good performance as “The Inquisitor,” an embodiment of Joan d’Arc’s conscience and doubt. It leads to this affecting scene, where Joan is faced with the fact that a miracle in her early life was little more than a projection of her own desires:

“You didn’t see what was, Joan. You saw what you wanted to see.”

  • The Other Weirdo

“You didn’t see what was, Joan. You saw what you wanted to see.”

Isn’t this true of all religious people?
