Jared Wilson’s False Equivalence

Jared Wilson (remember him?) tries a bit of “marriage debate jujitsu” by turning a pro-equality meme against itself:

(via Stuff Christian Culture Likes, alias “the cesspool”.)

I don’t think it works. For starters, arguing that banning one type of marriage and allowing another type of marriage are equivalent is just counter-intuitive.

It also forces you to argue that marriage was inaccurately defined in America from the founding until Loving vs. Virginia. So Jared is arguing for marriage just as it’s always been … since 1967. You also have to explain how our founders – I’m sure they’re good and Godly men in Jared’s mind – could have gotten it so wrong with all their arguments against racial mixing.

This is mindbogglingly stupid. The ban of interracial marriages was the default state and if anything allowing interracial marriages was considered a change in the definition of traditional marriage. If you want to use the analogy it would have to work the other way round: allowing gay marriage is like allowing interracial marriages.

That’s actually what I thought he was saying when I first read it. The cognitive dissonance is strong with this one. So strong that it caused my own cognitive dissonance, lol.
