Where Does the Republican Party Find Them, part 42

Suzanne Atanus, a GOP candidate for US Representative of Illinois, is blaming the gays and abortion for … just about everything, really. From the Daily Herald:

“I am a conservative Republican and I believe in God first,” Atanus said. She said she believes God controls the weather and has put tornadoes and diseases such as autism and dementia on earth as punishment for gay rights and legalized abortions.

“God is angry. We are provoking him with abortions and same-sex marriage and civil unions,” she said. “Same-sex activity is going to increase AIDS. If it’s in our military it will weaken our military. We need to respect God.”

Both autism and tornadoes? Truly, there are many arrows in God’s quiver.

Now here’s Kathleen Tonn, a US Senatorial candidate from Alaska. She posted this video from a steam room in which she performed a song in tongues. Apparently this was an effort to make a convert.

For this and other feats, Tonn has been declared “Sarah Palin 2.0″.

One point got my attention:

“One point of clarification: Speaking in tongues or singing in tongues is very valuable because the message cannot be understood by Satan. But the Holy Spirit can use that message to bring deliverance, to bring clarity, to give discernment and words of wisdom and knowledge, and tongues is interpreted by a person who has the gift of interpretation. So I’m going to go fast.”

I’ve never heard that bit of theology before. I’ve heard that speaking in tongues is a sign of divine inspiration and that the angels can understand it, but I’ve never heard it described as a way to sneak messages past Satan. Has anybody heard this before, or is it a new wrinkle?
