Escaping From Cuba

Escaping From Cuba October 19, 2008

As Castro’s half century dictatorship nears its end, let’s pray that Cuba is able to develop into a place where no one wants to run from: here is an account of the defections of Reinier Alcantara and Pedro Faife, who follow at least seven other athletes since last year. Escapees are labeled “gusanos,” (worms) and their families often face severe consequences. We cannot begin to imagine the pain this must cause to all involved. These defections remind us, also, of the vast majority of Cuba’s citizens, who cannot travel like athletes are occasionally allowed to do. And as Catholics, let us remember heroes of the faith suffering to bring human rights to their people, beginning with Oscar Biscet.
