The Vatican is Now in Favor of the Death Penalty?! December 3, 2008

There is some discussion on the net that the Vatican is opposed to making the death penalty for homosexuality illegal. That’s right, the suggestion is that the Vatican supports the use of the death penalty for gays. The UN is trying to pass a resolution which would oppose the use of the death penalty for gays, and the Vatican is opposed to it. So, according to the logic of some, that means the Vatican must be in favor of the use of the death penalty for gays.

Obviously, something is wrong here. The Vatican makes it actively known that it is opposed to the use of the death penalty in modern society, and sees its use, if it is ever valid, to follow rigorous requirements to justify its use. Those requirements could never be met by the mere fact someone is homosexual.

So, what is exactly being argued, and what exactly is the Vatican’s opposition? The new resolution, which seeks to “decriminalize homosexuality” does far more than that, but proposes ways to control and eliminate “discrimination against homosexuals.”  Catholic opposition to gay unions could be one such “discrimination.” More clarity needs to be had, because, human rights should be given to all people, no matter what their sexual gender is; but not everything one might think is a “right” actually is. The Vatican is rejecting the resolution because its principles are too far-reaching, and transcend the intent behind the resolution itself.

Does anyone else find the kind of argument used at “After Ellen” vaguely familiar?
