Atheists Saving the Galaxy

Ok, how many of you pre-ordered Star Wars: The Old Republic?  I know it’s a lot of you.

I pre-ordered it too.  I have friends across the country world I scarcely get to see anymore.  This affords me a couple hours a week to interact with them.  Are they all leveling way faster than I?  Yes.  I’m that clumsy Jedi consular who can barely ignite his lightsaber without losing a limb.  But it’s ok: it’s a 21st century way to game with my friends.

So, all you atheists who are going to be playing this, what server are you on?  What faction?  What class?  Perhaps we non-believers can share some camaraderie from across the planet (or galaxy).  Who knows, maybe there’s a famous atheist or two we could game with?

    I’m playing!

I have a Trooper-Commando and a Jedi Knight both on Grand Master Zym currently.

  • Carpus

PC only. Oh well. Sounds like fun.

  • Mark

Has anyone noticed that atheists _tend_ to favor Star Wars despite its overtly religious, faith-centered overtones, but theists _tend_ to favor Star Trek even though it promotes a godless, socialist Utopia? Strange.

    • julian

Proof all you “atheists” secretly want God!!111!!11!!

      • Mark

“Search your feelings, you know it to be true.”

    • RowanVT

Actually, I like star trek just as much. But The Old Republic is very interesting to play.

    • Alex

Personally prefer star trek over star wars; I don’t like magical knights and evil wizards in my science fiction.
Though really i prefer Ian Banks’ Culture stuff, as it is a much cooler godless socialist utopia than star trek.

Feh! I play World of Warcraft (Kirin Tor server, Alliance, if anyone is interested.) Sure there is a lot of religion, but

      A. The dominant religion of the Alliance is the Church of the Holy Light, which is as close to an atheist church as you’re ever likely to see;

      B. The few gods that are identified as gods — the Titans, the Dragon Aspects, the Old Gods and the rest — are nothing more than advanced, very powerful beings. To paraphrase Arthur C. Clarke, “Any sufficiently powerful creature is indistinguishable from a god.”

“Any sufficiently powerful creature is indistinguishable
        from a god.”

        Right! So . . .

  • Mika Hakonen

Haven’t pre-ordered, but I and the girlfriend could definitely play in a JT led SWTOR guild. ;)

  • Jon Voisey

I’ve pre-ordered. Not sure which way I’m going to go. During the Beta, I went Jedi Guardian and loved it. But most of my friends are playing Sith on the Shadow Hand server.

I have a few other real life friends that are going to be going Jedi when they get the game, but they haven’t gotten it yet so I have no idea what server they’re going to be on, but I’d like to play with them.

  • Rawnaeris

I’m on Wall of Light. Same username as here. Sith, of course.

    • Rawnaeris

And to finish my thought, a guild of Freethoughtblogs readers would be quite fun.

  • Sithrazer

Look at my user name. Of -course- I’m going to be playing this game. Even if I hate it, I’ll still probably play it. It’s the same character flaw that Lucas has been exploiting to get us to keep buying those horribly revised releases on new media (HAN SHOT FIRST).

Kaas City server, Sith Inquisitor. I’ll probably have a smuggler at some point, though. I do love me some smuggling.

    Mark @3

I wholeheartedly disagree. Star Trek has much more appeal to the atheist than Star Wars. Picard states flat out that they don’t believe in superstition or supernatural beings.

Non-religious Star Wars fans have even gone so far as to religionize the Jedi, stating a belief in the Force, and make up a decent sized population of some countries.

I have two characters on Kellian Jarro:
Semany, level 18 Jedi Shadow on Taris
Khatami, level 12 Trooper Vanguard on Coruscant
It would be cool if we had a guild. :)

  • Aliasalpha

Hell yeah, my copy should be arriving in the post today or tomorrow thanks to amazon’s super expensive delivery.

The only character I’ve put any real work into so far is my mirialan smuggler, Suni. Currently at level 24 and trending towards the light side but tends to be uncompromising & ruthless when someone screws her over so I’ve got about 80/20 light/dark.

I have to say that as a person who doesn’t like multiplayer much and who likes people even less, I’m enjoying the hell out of the game and even the social aspect of it. For me to try an MMO is pretty rare but to pre-purchase one… You can tell its a bioware game, the story (or ‘stories’ since there’s 8) is the real hook for me.

Oh and as a tip for republic players, Taris DOES eventually run out of quests, it just feels like it never ever will given how many times you seem to get ambushed by quests

    • Aliasalpha

Bah, I mean 8 stories, bloody smilies!!

  • Tynk

I have a smuggler on dark reaper but I am all alone! What server are you on JT. I can awkwardly heal your “learning” wounds!

  • stubby

I never game online anymore because I always seemed to end up playing with douche bags. If the right game comes along and I could play with fellow atheists I think I would give it another shot. Is Everquest Online Adventures still all the rage?

    • Aliasalpha

Odd as it may seem, I’ve done a fair few team ups with random people so far and out of all of them I’d say at most 2 were less than great and only one of those 2 was actually bad (the kind where they set the rule don’t rush at the start and then never ever stopped moving for the rest of the mission)

  • briandurden

My girlfriend and I are on the Kinrath Spider PVP server on the Sith faction. We’re currently in a wait-mode because our friends started late and are catching up to our alts.

  • Katie Tims

My boyfriend Shawn (AKA “Carsh”) is on the server [Shii cho]. He’s also a Jedi consular, and he’s probably going to be of a higher level than you. You should hang out (he can give you stuff ;) )

  • Marty

Zahir, bounty hunter on Vornskr. Loving it, although the grace period being over I have to wait for my copy to arrive from England (as they don’t sell it in Oz till March, Oceania apparently still being a penal colony that takes 6 months to get to by ship – yes, I am bitter!).
