Tony Perkins and his sad devotion to that ancient religion

There’s a lot of reasons to be a little wary of MMOs.  They’re huge time sinks, addictive (as are most things that are tons of fun).  None of those seem to bother Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council, but he’s got another reason for why you should eschew Bioware’s recent foray into the market, Star Wars: The Old Republic…

Tony Perkins, head of the Family Research Council — a hate group, according the the Southern Poverty Law Center — took to the radio to denounce Bioware’s Star Wars: The Old Republic, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game.

“In a new Star Wars game, the biggest threat to the empire may be homosexual activists!” Perkins announced during his daily radio commentary. “In a galaxy not so far far away, Star Wars gamers have already gone to the dark side. The new video game, Star Wars: The Old Republic, has added a special feature: gay relationships.”

Holy shit!  Send in the troops!  They’re treating homosexuality like it actually exists!!!

Family is such a beautiful concept.  It’s a real pity when adherence to a collection of ignorant words causes modern day people to turn the word “family” into a euphemism for god-endorsed discrimination.  Yet anytime you hear a fundamentalist Christian use that word, you can bet the farm they’re about to oppose equality in the name of Jesus.  This is the ugliness of faith – it empowers immoral behavior.

He continued: “On the game’s website, there are more than 300 pages of comments–a lot of them expressing anger that their kids will be exposed to this Star Warped way of thinking. You can join them by logging on and speaking up. It’s time to show companies who the Force is really with!”

Wrong answer, Tony.  The “We’re the majority!” card is a pretty impotent play in general.  It’s even more impotent when you’re not the majority.  The majority of Americans support same-sex marriage.  If you want Bioware to trust in the force of pleasing the majority, you and the bad guys of bigot galaxy have all the appeal of a rancor.

It turns out that same-sex romance isn’t even in the game…yet.  It will be added in the near future according to Bioware.

In a statement on their website, Bioware explained that same sex relationships were not yet possible in the game.

“Same gender romances with companion characters in Star Wars: The Old Republic will be a post-launch feature,” the company wrote. “Because The Old Republic is an MMO, the game will live on through content expansions which allow us to include content and features that could not be included at launch, including the addition of more companion characters who will have additional romance options.”

Good on them.  I only play the game a few hours a week at most, but they can have my $15/month.

If you play SWTOR, I’m on Vrook Lamar.  My characters are (all Republic side) Ureldor, Dag, Jenar, and Glenn.  Perhaps we can make a blasphemous guild?

I was a bit peeved this weekend when I realized I was unable to romance Kira… So my only choice is that arrogant sleezy breeder Doc… no thanks!

Hit 41 last night (weekends only for me) but still really tempted to switching over to your server. My guild is a raiding guild and only raids during the week.

I will decide while I am without computer this week due to moving.

    • Timid Atheist

As much as I dislike homophobia, can we not call people who are heterosexual, breeders? >.<

As for the game itself, I'm so happy Bioware is going to add the option for romances with both sexes for both sexes. Now all we need is to add the option to chose something beyond male and female for sex!

I'm on Vrook Lamar as well, JT. I'll have to add you to my friend list and seek you out sometime.

      • tynk

I always thought breeders kind of even things out.
        heterosexual – homosexuals
        gay/lesbian – breeder

or it could include… meh fine.

but if not breeder, then what do you people like to be called?

        • Forbidden Snowflake

Is there anything wrong with the term “straight”?
I can see how it can be said to be heterosexist, but is it actually considered an offensive/undesirable term by any significant number of people?

          • tynk

I always took straight to mean an exclusion of all forms of non-traditional sexual behavior. Shunning such fun as s&m, exhibitionism, spouse swapping, etc. not just same sex.

I consider breeders to include anyone who would procreate naturally, how ever they may choose to enjoy the act. But then I may be thinking too deeply on the subject again.

          • Aliasalpha

tynk, I think the word you’re looking for isn’t ‘straight’, I think its ‘boring’

          • Forbidden Snowflake

I always took straight to mean an exclusion of all forms of non-traditional sexual behavior.

I think the term for that is ‘vanilla‘, the opposite of which is probably ‘kink’.

I consider breeders to include anyone who would procreate naturally, how ever they may choose to enjoy the act.

I always considered ‘breeders’ to be a derogatory term coined in response to anti-gay slurs/sentiments.

          • tynk

            ok, urban dictionary confirms.
I will stop using the term breeder.

I swear I am not a heterophobe! Some of my best friends are hetero’s!

      • stuartvo

Well, I’m a “straight” (aka “boring” aka “involuntarily celibate”) and I use the term “breeder”. Although I reserve it for those heteros who are masochistic enough to literally “breed”.

I especially enjoy using it when I go shopping and watch the struggle to preserve their sanity as they drag their obstreperous offspring along.

More broadly, I’m perversely amused by the anti-slur-slur nature of the term.

  • Zinc Avenger

He’s just jealous that his religion doesn’t give the ability to crush a trachea with the power of his mind.

Or maybe it does, but all the followers are so weak-minded we heathens don’t even notice…

  • Dave, the Kwisatz Haderach

Hey now, that’s totally unfair JT. Rancors are clearly more awesome than bigots. I would love to have a pet rancor. It would sure as hell keep the Jehovah’s Witnesses off my porch.

  • MyMindMeanders

I have a few un-guilded rooms on that server if you want to form a guild. Low level ones to be sure, but they are available to be blasphemous. I have a sentinel (Motohko) and scoundrel (Andrevum) who aren’t with my other guild.

  • onefuriousllama

Ah mah gahd what a twat. Twattish McTwatty. Twattenstein.

I never really understood how people can be so freaking scared of people as fabulous as homies are.

They must not have ever partied with properly flamboyant gays, which is a bit sad.

    • NathanDST

Any chance we could change that “twat” business to something that’s not a gender based slur? For example, idiot, fool, moron, asshole, jerk, dimwit, bigot, cupcake (I hear that last is popular on Pharyngula; I doubt they’ll mind you spreading it around).

  • Jeffrey

Did he really say “threat to the empire”? Wouldn’t that imply the opposite of his point?

  • Aliasalpha

Grrr now I miss my gaming PCs power supply even more, hurry up and be repaired damnit!

  • imjustred I need to re-roll on another server. Thanks a lot :-)

  • Rieux

I’ve played all three titles in BioWare’s Dragon Age series (which is an RPG but not an MMO one), and guess what, Tony? They’ve got gay relationships. Lots of ‘em.

The first time I played through Origins, at one point in the plot I discovered that the only way for my (male) main character to avoid being betrayed and quite possibly killed by (a male) one of the several secondary characters in the party was to bed him. Not exactly where I intended to take my Gray Warden, but oh, well. The guy was cute, I guess.

    I feel so slutty.

  • Aquaria

Does this idiot realize that America isn’t the only place where video games are sold or played? You know, countries that don’t have hangups about gays getting together?

    • Aliasalpha

Is he the type of person who might realise that there ARE other places than america?

      • Aquaria

That’s sort of the point I was making. He thinks America is the world. The “sheesh” remark = /sarcasm

  • Rip Steakface

The best part about this is that Bioware has been doing same sex relationships for years. Mass Effect 1 had what was somewhat like a lesbian relationship option back in 2008 (though the other female was actually a member of a monogender race that has the appearance of blue-skinned human females with tentacle hair… also, they live for a millennium. Sci fi!). I don’t recall same-sex options in older Bioware games like Baldur’s Gate or KOTOR, but anyone is free to fill me in (I don’t even remember a romance storyline proper in KOTOR – Bastila declares her love for you rather suddenly).

    • Mutsumi

Baldur’s gate didn’t have the option unless you modded it in. KOTOR like you said didn’t have much of a romance in the first place.

  • sumdum

So tempting.. but I already have characters on Trask Ulgo (EU) and Kaibur Crystal (US). I’m such an altaholic.

  • NathanDST

As others have pointed out already, this isn’t the first time Bioware’s had gay relationships in their games. In fact, in response to Dragon Age 2, they had one guy complaining about it on their forums, and how much he didn’t like Anders hitting on him. Using more words and a slightly more diplomatic tone, they told him to fuck off. That made me want to play the game even more (although, once I actually had the game, I got disappointed really fast, but that’s another tale).
