I'm a goat

Atheists live cold, terrible, miserable lives.

Michaelyn and the little one are undoubtedly thinking about how this is all meaningless without believing someone rose from the dead 2,000 years ago.

The only heavens are the ones we make in this world.  It’s a pity when people lose out on a moment of heaven in this life arranging for a non-existent paradise in the next.  What more do people want than this life?

I like dating her.  She’s wearing my shirt.

You guys are wonderful.
PERSONAL: Happy birthday, Hitch.

It is worth noting, I’m sure, that the “little one” is not herself an atheist, because she’s too young to have those things figured out, and we don’t stamp our children with our ideology like religious people do.

Last time I checked, atheism was not an ideology.

Did I miss the memo ?

      • KMA

        Yes, you did. Check again.

but if she doesn’t believe in a god (if her world-view does not include a god) she is an atheist. nothing ideological, nothing political. just the opposite of a theistic worldview, isn’t it?

If you think about it, though, atheism is pretty much a default. Since to be anything but an atheist you have to actively believe in deities, but to be an atheist, you just have to not do that.

I have no idea if the little one believes in god or not. I know Michaelyn doesn’t.

And whether or not the little one believes in god is irrelevant to me. Like it was said earlier, she lacks the cognitive capacity to make that call (though I would argue that even a five year-old could figure out that people don’t rise from the dead).

What makes me happy, personally, is that for her the question of whether or not she’s a goat in that game is far more important. It means she hasn’t had some false idea of sacred ideas foisted on her by adults preying on young minds biologically programmed to trust adults.

    Because religious people do that.

For one second, I thought that you liked dating the little one, and that she was wearing your shirt.

I was about to decry you as a secret catholic. My bad.

This just made me think of a really great line from an excellent song by Ben Howard. It goes:

“Heaven is the place we know,
Heaven is the arms that hold us long before we go”

If any heaven is worth pursuing, then it’s this one, human closeness and intimacy.

The little one is clearly a pagan who worships the Goat God, sometimes called Pan.
