The Scarlet Letter

At Skepticon IV I got asked to do an interview for an upcoming documentary: The Scarlet Letter.  They just put out a trailer and it’s looking really good.  I’m flattered to be asked to give my opinions along with the company in this film which includes Richard Carrier, PZ Myers, Dan Barker, Dave Silverman, Greta Christina, and others.

Often when I speak, usually within about five minutes of being picked up at the airport someone says, “You’re so soft spoken” or something like that.  It generally comes through when I do interviews like this or for We Are Atheism.

I am soft spoken.  I’m actually quite shy in-person.  I do not scream about religion because my personality is one that favors loudness or conflict.  I do it because the problem of religion is so great that even reluctant warriors need to throw in.  I think it would be immoral if I let my nature take me out of the fight against unreason.

Incidentally, it was during the interview for The Scarlet Letter that this picture was taken.

They were setting up their equipment while I was checking my text messages when Nyssa, one of the filmmakers, told me not to move and snapped some shots.  Everybody who sees this picture comments about how reflective and solemn I look.

I think I was texting Michaelyn to tell her I was about to pass out. :P  The interview was shot right after my talk about anorexia and I was just exhausted.

FAITH: Jesus is not the answer to this question.
POLITICS: Boehner calls Obama an “anti-war President.”
ACTIVISM & GODLESSNESS: Purpose-driven life and secularism.

And thank you for speaking out, and fighting for what is true, in spite of your shy nature.

  • Pierce R. Butler

Yeah, I look at the picture in that “About the author” box and worry about how JT could possibly cope if someone were to look at him funny.

  • Spanish Inquisitor

The documentary looks very, very interesting. When Dawkins first came out with that big red A (it was him, wasn’t it? My memory is still good, isn’t it?)I didn’t have a lot of hope that it would catch on.

    But it has, hasn’t it?

And, yeah, JT, that “angry young punk” image doesn’t do you justice.

  • Adam Lee

Clearly, that picture shows you enveloped in the darkness of soul that is the fate of all atheists. :)

Other misconceptions: we eat babies. Well, that one’s true.

Don’t give away too many secrets! Looks like it will be a fantastic documentary. Can’t wait to see it.

    This looks great!

JT when does it come out?

  • John Eberhard

    I anticipate this with alacrity.
