Bigotry vs. Education

I came across this interesting graph of how various counties in North Carolina voted on the anti-gay bill.

Ignorance is the soul of bigotry.  Nothing makes ignorance durable like faith.  And nothing is so potent an antidote to ignorance as education.

As the demographics get younger, rejection of religion increases dramatically.  Young people are the future, not just because they are the heirs to the planet, but because they are not bound by old ways of thinking.  I freaking love this generation.

About JT Eberhard

When not defending the planet from inevitable apocalypse at the rotting hands of the undead, JT is a writer and public speaker about atheism, gay rights, and more. He spent two and a half years with the Secular Student Alliance as their first high school organizer. During that time he built the SSA’s high school program and oversaw the development of groups nationwide. JT is also the co-founder of the popular Skepticon conference and served as the events lead organizer during its first three years.

Correlation is not always causation. Universities are much more concentrated in urban areas then in backwoods rural areas. Urban areas are also usually more liberal.

Is it education that leads to liberalism or being in a diverse urban environment? Or both? Or neither?

The number one solution to all of the worlds problems is education.
It may not be the quickest way to solve individual problems, but it works.

That being said, bigotry is defeated by education, but not necessarily by formal education, though it may be a by product. Bigotry is defeated with education through diversity. When kids learn that people of all different looks, choices and origins are fundamentally similar.

It is learning that there is no need to be scared because they love, live, and hurt just like you. One of the greatest tools we have at our disposal right now is the internet, as children from around the world are communicating with people of every background across the globe.

Things are getting better, and it is happening faster every day.

There’s hope that some day this country may not be filled with quite as many bigoted douchecakes. As long as we keep working to keep their dogma out of the education system. Here in KS, that’s a damned tough fight.

It’s not accurate. 2 counties: Guilford and New Hanover ended up in favor of the Amendment. Granted those two counties were split nearly even but I’d still remove the inaccurate picture.

See how it ended up by county here:

Obviously they need to get rid of the colleges to purify the state even more.

This also only really can be examined if one takes a look at every institute of higher education in the state, by county. I suspect there might be a few more than what is shown, but I could be wrong.

I was impressed when I looked at the county by county split. Most counties for were up by 40+ points. Two of the counties against were split by 60points. The others against barely were.
