What's your favorite cartoon music?

Let’s get nostalgic again.  Here are some of mine.

Once more, leave yours in the comments, but only one vid at a time lest you wind up in the jaws of the spam filter.

Funny story about this one ^^. I once sang it for an audition for an opera. I got cast.

Not a cartoon, but still nostalgic. :)

For no reason, occasionally the Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers or Inspector Gadget themes get stuck in my head.

Why is Duck Tales not on this list? You disappoint me.

    • http://www.facebook.com/lezkimo suzysalaksartok

This is another song that randomly gets lodged into my head, even though I know almost none of the words.

A podcast I listen to once did a ‘test of patience’ where he just played every language version of the Duck Tales theme that he could find one after another. I had the song stuck in my head almost the whole day before that too, and just when it was starting to dislodge BAM there it was in a crapton of languages played over and over, was pretty screwed up, and since coincidences are God, as we learned…then God must be Scrooge McDuck.

    • Nes

Not a cartoon song, but it does reference the Duck Tales theme and one always reminds me of the other:

Also, I just realized when watching another one of their videos that Kate is Shelley in Raising Hope. Don’t know why I never noticed before…

  • JamesM

I’ll have to give the top 3 prize to Anime:

The haunting ending theme from Chobits, Ningyo Hime.

The opening theme from Chobits, Let Me Be With You.

And the end theme from season 1 of Spice and Wolf Ringo Biyore.

  • http://cafeeine.wordpress.com Cafeeine

    Here’s another old favorite:

  • JSC_ltd

I’ve always liked “The Transformers” theme because of its use of Aeolian mode, a relative rarity in Western music (pun intended). Also, the random jazz sting at the end of it is just so… well, random.

    • http://cafeeine.wordpress.com Cafeeine

Which TF theme? There were several.

      • JSC_ltd

        The original one.
If you tried to embed something, I’m not seeing it.

        • http://cafeeine.wordpress.com Cafeeine

It appears so. It was supposed to be a clip with all versions of the TF theme.

  • KirikaSena

My first thought after seeing the tweet for this post was “Chip and Dale!” Also, Inspector Gadget.

  • Jeremy Shaffer

Don’t know how to embed or hyperlink.

The Barber of Saville via Bugs Bunny. I was shocked to learn that the music of the cartoons was actually classical music! Those evil people who put culture into entertainment should be flogged with cooked spaghetti.

    • leftwingfox

The overture for the Barber of Seville was on the radio the other day, and in my mind, I was watching the entire cartoon. :)

    • JSC_ltd

Kill the Wabbit is music from Wagner’s operas.

  • Andrew B.

No mention of David the Gnome?

  • leftwingfox

    Anything by Yoko Kanno.

I mean, seriously; Macross Plus (Voices and After, In the Dark), Cowboy Bebop (Tank!, Real Folk Blues), Wolf’s Rain (Stray and Gravity) and Ghost In the Shell (Inner Universe, Rise, Lithium Flower) and everything in between.

For Western Cartoons, let’s go for the quintissential awesome opening for shitty 80′s shows:

I have just purchased 1000 shares of Jordache and Member’s Only stock completely against my will.

      and Ghost In the Shell

In addition to Stand Alone Complex, another excellent one from the Ghost in the Shell film:

PS-how do I get this to show as a video and not a link? *n00b*

    • http://www.facebook.com/lezkimo suzysalaksartok

Just put the long youtube link on its own line (ie, the youtube.com one, not the youtu.be one.)

Itll do it all by its lonesome.

  • Bryony Vaughn

I encourage our kids to watch Kipper because I love the theme song so much.

  • Cunning Pam

“Pinky, are you pondering what I’m pondering?”

“I think so, Brain, but this time, you put the trousers on the chimp.”

Beat me to this one! I just found out that have the whole thing on Netflix.

  • lrah

    Yeah, mine are Japanese, too.
    Paprika http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiU2mZYunV0
Then there are the Utena Duel Songs, all of which I’m completely in love with. One example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFI5nos7JY4

Oh, if we’re including anime, then

Anything composed by Joe Hisaishi, Yuki Kajiura, or Susumu Hirasawa. There’s no way I can choose between them, so I’ll just link to a couple for each.

Hisaishi: Legend of Ashitaka (Princess Mononoke), One Summer’s Day (Spirited Away)

Kajiura: Sagitta Luminis (Puella Magi Madoka Magica), A Song of Storm and Fire (Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicles)

Hirasawa: A Drop Filled With Memories (Paprika), Chiyoko’s Theme (Millennium Actress)

  • http://www.literateperversions.com Chris Hall

I have to throw in my hat with everyone who says Cowboy Bebop. Yoko Kanno is fucking amazing, as is that opening sequence. I’d also throw in the wildly over-the-top music for The Venture Bros.

  • Anonymous

I’m betraying my age. The theme from The Flintstones is the pne that jumps to mind first. That may be related to the fact that i was one of those who actually walked with dinosaurs.

  • http://reasonableconversation.wordpress.com Kaoru Negisa

Not nostalgic at all, but since it’s Avengers Weekend and an awesome theme song, allow me to present: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlw6l9v7FYc

  • Desert Son, OM

One of them is certainly Flash Gordon.

    Still learning,

  • http://www.facebook.com/lezkimo suzysalaksartok

    Ok, if anime:

Last Exile theme – Cloud Age Symphony

  • Desert Son, OM

Not a specific syndicated, episodic television show, but from an animated film:

Unicron’s Medley from Transformers: The Movie.

Feel the mid-1980-ness. If you listen long enough, your saliva turns into Aqua Net.

    Still learning,

  • http://www.facebook.com/lezkimo suzysalaksartok

    And the Tenjou Tenge theme

The opening is better than the rest of the show I think, though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001644082783 jeffsherry

The industrial jazz of Raymond Scott, Powerhouse, which was used in a number of Looney Tune cartoons.

  • http://johnnykaje.wordpress.com/store Johnnykaje

Does anyone remember this kid’s show? It was called Candle Cove and I must have been 6 or 7. I never found reference to it anywhere so I think it was on a local station around 1971 or 1972. I lived in Ironton at the time. I don’t remember which station, but I do remember it was on at a weird time, like 4:00 PM.

  • http://johnnykaje.wordpress.com/store Johnnykaje

    (sorry everyone) :P

  • phil

ren and stimpy. or the ramones cover of spiderman

  • Bruce [Base]

I take it by “cartoon” you mean Saturday morning style kid’s shows. A few I still like:

The theme from Tenchi Muyo! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZPtFNTpCzk&feature=related).

the Japanese version of the Sailormoon (’95-’00) intro music.

    The intro from Dexter’s Lab.

  • Bruce [Base]

Oh yeah, my favorite by a wide mile (I suppose the music itself is technically fairly mediocre, but I don’t seem to care for some reason):

  • Mary

Is there no one of the Mighty Mouse generation here?

  • Mbierbaum

    Jonny Quest. That is all.

  • Stacy

I’ve always been partial to Underdog:

  • Stacy

…and, then again, Top Cat was mighty nice. The two of them go together nicely, I think.

  • Astrobot

I too love the Darkwing Duck, Rescue Rangers, Gummibears, Inspector Gadget, Tale Spin, etc. intros, but in Swedish. I am obviously biased, but in many cases I think the Swedish versions are better. The lyrics are sillier in translation (not that that’s necessarily a bad thing) but the voices they’ve chosen are better.

Darkwing Duck is probably the best example of this, and it has the added bonus of not changing the name so we just pronounce “Darkwing Duck” with a Swedish accent x)

  • Brad

I’ll second the Bugs Bunny ‘Barber of Seville’ and add Vince Guaraldi’s Linus and Lucy theme. I can’t really think of any theme songs from cartoons that really jumped out at me, but it’s been decades since i watched much in the way of cartoons.
Now, if you had asked about series themes, Get Smart, Dallas, and Hawaii 5-0 immediately come to mind (and will probably stay there all day – sob).

  • http://www.facebook.com/lezkimo suzysalaksartok

Check out a band called Powerglove.

They have heavy metal remixees of classic Video game and cartoon music, some are pretty awesome (I particularly like the Zelda Medley, the Batman theme, and the Tetris one.)

They also have done the themes for Transformers, Johnny Quest, Power Rangers, Pokemon, etc.

  • http://www.twitter.com/WCLPeter WCLPeter

Nearly 50 responses and no one mentions probably the best 80′s cartoon theme tune ever?

  • StevoR

    Cities of Gold :

& also StarBlazers a.k.a. Space Battlecruiser Yamato.

  • karmakin

Well…if people are going into anime…

My absolute favorite (by a long shot) is My Soul, Your Beats from Angel Beats!

There are other classics, like Tank! from Cowboy Bebop and Cruel Angel’s Thesis from Neon Genesis Evangalion, but to me the OP (and I’ll be honest, the entire soundtrack) from Angel Beats! trumps them.

  • mikee

Don’t have a link but Defenders of the Earth was a big favorite for me

  • ApuCalypso

    I can’t believe Saber Rider hasn’t been mentioned yet…
    Saber Rider Theme

Ok, count me as one who is unable to embed the video properly, but my nomination is for…

    Fraggle Rock:

Jeez JT, these songs take this 36 year old back.

  • Tony

Given my nature as a massive comic book fan, the most obvious cartoon that is simultaneously my probably #1, while also being one of the crappiest series ever…

    Challenge of the Super Friends

Ok, sorry. Enough of being thread hog…

  • http://www.ziztur.com Flimsyman

    +1 on X-Men and Thundercats.

Plus, Chip and Dale’s Rescue Rangers had one episode called “The Case of the Cola-Cult.” One of the greatest commentaries on religion I think I’ve ever seen.
