Last day to sign up for the American Bible Challenge

Today’s the last day to sign up a team of three for the American Bible Challenge.

Given that atheists tend to know more about the book than believers, I’d love to see an atheist team go in and mop the floor with believers for the lulz.  Who would your atheist dream team be?

I’m gonna go Dan Barker, Richard Carrier, and Matt Dillahunty.  Can I be the coach?

About JT Eberhard

When not defending the planet from inevitable apocalypse at the rotting hands of the undead, JT is a writer and public speaker about atheism, gay rights, and more. He spent two and a half years with the Secular Student Alliance as their first high school organizer. During that time he built the SSA’s high school program and oversaw the development of groups nationwide. JT is also the co-founder of the popular Skepticon conference and served as the events lead organizer during its first three years.

You should get a team together and give the winnings to FFRF.

  • cag

That’s a hell of a team, It would be heavenly to see them in action. It would be devilishly amusing. My god, but the angelic look on their faces would be demonic. Just imagine how many christians would pray for their souls. There is no reason not to. It would not just be stition, it would be super stition.

    • Drakk

Sir, please take all my internets.

  • danielkoster

My dream team would be Abraham, Moses, and Jesus. We’re gonna know that whole book!

    • JSC_ltd

Bah, Paul knew way more about it than Jesus.

  • Matt Dillahunty

I know enough to know that I’m not the right guy for this. I’d stick Bob Price in my slot.

    • Patrick

Price, Ehrman, and Jeremey Beahan from Reasonable Doubts.

Between Price and Ehrman, they could answer questions that the announcer thinks is wrong, and correct the announcer.

  • Rachel Pridgen

Dan Barker, Jerry DeWitt, and Teresa McBain.

    I’ll co-coach.

  • Jaime

That would be interesting to watch. I was involved in a competitive bible study program for 15 years (I kid you not), both as a contestant and a coach. I got to see a whole spectrum in what was considered ‘knowledge’ of the bible. The most interesting thing to me would be to see what the host(s) and contestants thought of that.

    • Randy

      Don’t forget Robert Price!

  • Ebony Dixon

This makes me sad to know that people flat out ignore or try too, the fact that GOD is real and HE is very much in control of things that go on in this life. There is accountability attached to every word you speak and everything that you do. I pray that the Gospel will be presented to each of you in a way that will make you discard your doubts, your blasphemy, your distrust of the bible and repent of your sinful ways so that you may give your lives to Christ.
You are still alive because there is still time for you to change your mind before it’s to late.
I believe that it is everyone is entitled to their opinion, and I am just expressing mine.

I was trying to find out how to sign up for the American Bible Challenge and this is where google took me… I don’t believe that this was a coincidence. I believe GOD allowed it. This may be the last chance for anyone reading this to except Jesus as Lord and Savior.

    GOD and man were cool
Man disobeyed GOD (which is a sin)
    Sin separated man and GOD
Jesus came to be the bridge to connect GOD and man back together

There is no other name where man can be saved
No man comes to the Father (GOD) without going through the son (Jesus)

If you would like to accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior say this prayer…

Dear GOD, I recognize that I am a sinner and that I need help. I believe that Jesus died on the cross for my sins and rose again. So I would like for Him to come into my heart and help me to live a new life so that I can live in right relationship with you. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

If you prayed this prayer, you have been born again. If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that GOD raised Him from the dead, you shall be saved.

I pray that GOD will lead you to a church that will teach you the Word of GOD and surround you with people who will be an example of godly living.

      Ebony, consider this.

If you have had the gospel presented to you, and you know all the nifty information in it, then you should know the following:

If you are wearing clothing, right now, made of mixed fibers (say, a standard cotton-polyester blend), you’re supposed to be killed, preferably by being hit repeatedly with rocks. It says that in the gospel.

I don’t believe it was a coincidence that you came here so that I could deliver that very important information, to you, about the gospel.

      • Buzz Saw

Oh, no! Don’t go there! The gospels are just the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. That part of mixed fibers is not in those. I want to say it is in Leviticus. As stupid as such a rule is, I fear a believer would just come back and ignore your argument for getting your facts wrong. (Which has got to be some sort of logical fallacy…I don’t know what the formal name would be…not that people like this care if they make a logical fallacy.)

        • Paddy

I did not realize that that distinction could be made!

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that there would be loopholes for god botherers to get out of their own arguments.

          That totally figures.

I mean this respectfully (mostly), but what you wrote above is just dismissed by atheists as bible-babble.

Please think for a minute and consider the fact that your god does not exist, so the whole basis of your words don’t mean anything.

There’s no “discard your doubts, your blasphemy, your distrust of the bible” as you say. This implies that somehow we secretly can’t admit that he exists?

He just doesn’t exist. There’s no emotion or “sinful ways” as you write. It just ain’t so.

Do you ever have doubts that you are just wasting your time … and your life, when you could be doing something better for society?

    • nathanmarcy

Ebony, the bible talks about “The Unforgivable Sin”. According to the book, blasphemers are guilty of the unforgivable sin. If we can’t be forgiven of this sin, then why try? By even attempting to convert us, you are either admitting that the bible is wrong, or arrogant enough to think you are superior to your own god.

      • Icy Cantu

        Important distinction:

And so I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come. -Matthew 12:31-32

Back when I was like you, which was long before the internet so I had to say nonsensical stuff like this directly to people’s faces, I used to give my patronizing little spiel to the horrible heathens and then run off to my church friends so they could tell me how brave I was.

I wasn’t brave though, not then. I was merely spouting off by rote what I had been told was true and real and factual without having done much if any thinking as to whether the words I said lined up with reality. The really brave thing? Was when I started to question my faith and not to take Sunday school bibble-babble for a satisfactory answer any longer.

As I am an atheist, I am not going to pray for you. I will however urge you strongly to do some unbiased research into your belief system. Compare it to other denominations and other belief systems. Learn your own history. Read about what grevious harm has been done in the name of your religion, and what is still being done. When you are finished, hopefully then you will be able to understand why people can’t believe and why so many of us who were once quite like you have left that unquestioning, group think mindset for something more supportive of the values of human curiosity, of reason.

      Good luck.

I fear Ebony is long gone. His/Her post is already two days old on a thread that was dead two months ago. I have email replies turned on, in case there’s a sign of life here, but I think this thread is dead.

  • Sarah

You could ask her on twitter – she left a name and url that match to a twitter account, I assume that means she’d be up for it.

  • grumpyoldfart

Ebony, imagine how you would react if a Hindu tried to convert you to his faith with it’s multitude of dopey looking gods. Chances are you wouldn’t be even slightly tempted, not even for a few seconds. You’d just know it was all bullshit wouldn’t you?

That’s how atheists react when you are the one doing the preaching.
