The It Gets Worse Project

Christina here…

You’ve heard of the It Gets Better Project, the project created by Dan Savage:

The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better.

Of course, as a supporter of rights for everyone regardless of sexual orientation or sexuality or gender, I support this project.

Not everyone does.  Enter the It Gets Worse Project.

The It Gets Worse Project isn’t really much of a project. Instead, it’s more like a series of blog posts, but regardless, here is their mission:

Jett & Jahn Media has decided we need a response to Savage’s “It Gets Better” Project.

We have created the “It Gets Worse” Project, to educate young people about the negative consequences of the homosexual lifestyle.

We encourage viewers to join our campaign by uploading your own “It Gets Worse” video to Youtube and linking to our website.

Among other things, the It Gets Worse project alleges that Matthew Shepherd was killed “after he sexually harassed Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson.” (emphasis theirs)

Jett & Jahn media also claim they have been reading scientific articles, and have found:

Scientific studies show:

They typically don’t have faithful, monogamous relationships
They are more likely to be abused by their partner
They have higher rates of STD’s (including HIV/AIDS)
They are physically unable to conceive children
If they do adopt, their child grows up without a mother or father

References? I think not.

They also support assault and bullying (emphasis theirs, red text mine.):

Romney allegedly bullied John Lauber, a gay student with long blonde hair. Romney yelled, “He can’t look like that. That’s wrong. Just look at him!

A few days later, Romney recruited  a mob to help him cut Lauber’s hair.

They found Lauber in a room, tackled him, and pinned him to the ground. Lauber started crying and screamed for help.

Romney took out scissors and snipped off Lauber’s hair.

Then he led the mob back to his room in Stevens Hall and they celebrated.

Romney also mocked homosexuals in the classroom.

He shouted “Atta girl!” whenever homosexual student Gary Hummel spoke in English class.

Jett & Jahn Media supports Mitt Romney’s courage to stand up against homosexuality.

They have a Twitter: @@No_ItGetsWorse.

Humanity. Doing it wrong.

Frankly, I don’t see how the “it gets worse” campaign could even be effective?

The problem is with bullying, not health side effects. The people who are actually gay are going to see through the lies being directed at them. And what would they do about it? Not be gay?

    I call Poe.

Seriously. I just had a look-see through their site and their is simply no way it is anything other than a Poe.

    • Christina

I considered that it might be a Poe as well. but they have an archive of their podcast so… man… if it is a poe, it’s a GOOD one.

    • NateHevens

That second “their” should, in fact, be “there”…

And Christina, I’d agree it’s a good one. But after reading a lot of the things they’ve written, I simply can’t take them seriously. There’s just no way.

I want to agree with you there NateHeavens, but Christina’s right, it has to be GOOD. REALLLY GOOD, because there’s quite a bit of work put into this horrific nonsense. Homoophobia is just one part — they’re racist, anti-Semitic, anti-everything not Protestant, conspiracy-laden assholes. It’s like Jack Chick spawned two kids and they started a blog, and unfortunately Jack Chick is real :/

I see what you’re saying, but each time I read through one of their articles, I thought I was the Landover Baptist Church website, which was outed as a Poe a while back and now operates under that scheme.

Another problem is the set up of the site… based on my (admittedly limited) experience, the site is just too damn organized to be a legit bigoted site. The legit ones are usually an organization nightmare.

Then it’s the way the articles are worded. Like the one Christina quoted… that’s perhaps the most detailed, most disturbing version of what Romney did to gay kids in school that I’ve ever read… and they finish it with “Jett & Jahn Media supports Mitt Romney’s courage to stand up against homosexuality.”?

I mean, I know why you want to take it seriously. That’s the hallmark of a good Poe… being unable to distinguish it from the real thing. But I feel like, especially from Christina quoted, among others, the writers are metaphorically winking at us and saying “come on… we know you get it… come on.”

I emailed the article to a conservative right-wing Christian I know from Florida Atlantic University (the school I attend currently), and his response was this (quoted with permission):

No way that’s real. They’re making fun of Christian like me. I believe homosexuality is a sin, too, but you don’t combat it with bullying… you combat it with love. Any true Christian knows this. The people who wrote that are not true Christians. I bet it’s a bad attempt at parody.

I’m just not buying the “It Gets Worse Project” as legit. I swear it’s a poe.

Think about it… why would they bluntly describe exactly what Romney did and then say they support it? I would think that a legit article in this vain would try to sugarcoat it, perhaps try to make it look like Romney was the one being bullied. These people didn’t even try.

And then they say that Matthew Shepherd sexually harassed the two kids who murdered him? Come on. Even the Westboro Baptist Church isn’t saying that.

I’m just not buying it. I swear they are a Poe. A really good Poe, but a Poe nonetheless.

They are physically unable to conceive children

Now that is a canyon’s worth of stupid in one short sentence. What about, oh I don’t know, most women–gay, straight, or bi? And as far as being able to conceive goes, most straight men cannot conceive just like most bi and gay men, but there are men with wombs who have conceived. Besides, plenty of bi and gay men have offspring; there is nothing physically stopping all gay or bi man from being able to reproduce.

OK, male-male and female-female couples can’t conceive from sex acts (unless some trans genitals are involved), BUT the bonus is a couple of orders of magnitude fewer unwanted pregnancies. Without searching for a link, it’s my general belief that parents with planned pregnancies, on average, raise healthier kids.

Honestly, when is the religious right going to give LGBTQ people credit for having fewer abortions?
