Dad refutes "It's just traditional values"

A friend of mine posted an article on Chick-Fil-A’s bigotry toward gays the other day.  A few people came on to defend CFA, including this person.

Dad was having none of it.

Saying the Family Research Council just supports traditional family values is like saying the Klan just supports traditional Southern values.  The response is simple: those values are vile.

Someone else decided to jump in on behalf of Jesus.

Again, dad was not amused.

Imagine it’s 1970, and your favorite fast food restaurant actively supports limiting the rights of African Americans. Yeah, this is like that. Don’t be on the wrong side of history.

Bigots dislike the comparison to civil rights because it implies that they are modern day segregationists. History will view them as such, and rightly.

As has been said before, can your dad be my dad too? We often get told by the media who to look up to and who to have as our heroes. I think I have found a whole crop of heroes for me right here.
    Thanks JT

      Thanks JTsDad

  • Steve

Her characterization of Exodus International is also completely wrong

    Thanks JT’s dad.

My gay friends would like to be parents to their children without having to resort to 2nd class citizen self help. They need to do things like get cross powers of attorney and file extra permissions with schools about who can pick up the kid and more. This list of back fill on rights and permissions can be pretty modest in some States but an absolute nightmare in others.

Even *if* being gay were a choice, which it’s not, it would be no different than someone’s choice of political party or choice of religion. Discrimination on the basis of those things wouldn’t be…well, they weren’t considered a justifiable reason for discrimination in the past, although now many (e.g. teabaggers) see it as one.

All of your arguments are solid and too well-grounded to be caught up by this:

    Careful!

Except he wasn’t calling them Nazis. He was noting that they had the same rights as Nazis to express an opinion, and the rest of us have rights to evaluate them by their statements and actions.

Your concern is noted, but unfounded.

Your dad just dropped the mighty hammer of Thor on two nitwits. Awesome.

    Go JT’s dad!

I like your blog and all, but I increasingly believe that what Freethoughtblogs really needs is a WWJTDD blog (What Would JT’s Dad Do?)…

or at least guest posts every now and then.

I think that Chick-Fil-A can support whatever groups they want. They can give millions of dollars in donations to anti-gay groups if that’s what they want to do. We have the power to choose where we spend our money just as they do. Our communities have the power to choose what restaurants get to open.

    Speak with your wallet.

Chick-Fil-A will soon be relegated to the Bible belt states. The mayor of Boston has already banned Chick-Fil-A from the city. More major cities are sure to follow.

I do think it’s problematic that they make this donations in the name of the company. It would be different if the owner made them as a private person. Of course there would still be backlash towards the company, but I don’t think it would be this severe.

Saying the Family Research Council just supports traditional family values is like saying the Klan just supports traditional Southern values.

    Sherry M:

No one is making the gay community eat in back, refuse to serve or hire, or serve only their like kind.

She apparently doesn’t understand that while it’s easy to tell the difference between a colored person and a real American, telling who’s gay and who’s not can be more problematic. If there were a sure-fire way* to tell when you’re about to serve sweet tea to a gay, you can sure as shit bet that CFA would figure out how not to do it.

*Like, I don’t know, a pink star or something?

Maybe the most activity my Facebook page has ever seen!

I’ve found this thread to be very informative, mostly thanks to Mr. John Eberhard. But also, it’s interesting to hear first-hand the way right-wing conservative Christians rationalize the discrimination of LGBTs via “traditional family values”.

I was there, in a Dobson-induced coma, for a number of years. It looks so ridiculous when you step outside for some fresh air.

Thank goodness I’m a vegetarian. Thus, even when there isn’t a boycott I have no problem boycotting such places as CFA.

I do like how censorious nitwits invariably appoint themselves the role of defining what constitutes “traditional family values”. Who the hell gave them the job?

Pardon my french…but your dad is the fucking man.
