Ownership of your own life

I was stalking looking at Michaelyn’s facebook page the other day.  Under her quotes section she has a quote from me.

“The good news is that this life you lucked into is your own, and the only rewards or  punishments, the only real heaven and the only true hell, are the results of your own actions between now and when you die. You have an opportunity to live in a way so that when your time is up you will have discovered heaven long before you found death.”

I think I was drunk, which is why I don’t remember it.

About JT Eberhard

When not defending the planet from inevitable apocalypse at the rotting hands of the undead, JT is a writer and public speaker about atheism, gay rights, and more. He spent two and a half years with the Secular Student Alliance as their first high school organizer. During that time he built the SSA’s high school program and oversaw the development of groups nationwide. JT is also the co-founder of the popular Skepticon conference and served as the events lead organizer during its first three years.

Hey JT, don’t mean to post an off-topic comment, but I was wondering if there have been any updates from the school/teacher that sent you the message bragging about suppressing students from starting a freethought group at their school?

Truth. Never have I felt so alive until the day I accepted my own mortality.

Minchin, of course, says it like nobody else can…

    But here’s what gives me a hard-on:
I am a tiny, insignificant, ignorant bit of carbon.
I have one life, and it is short and unimportant…
But thanks to recent scientific advances I get to live twice as long as my great great great great uncleses and auntses.
Twice as long to live this life of mine
Twice as long to love this wife of mine
Twice as many years of friends and wine
Of sharing curries and getting shitty at good-looking hippies with fairies on their spines and butterflies on their titties.

Actually, unfortunately there are many rewards and punishments that are not related to anything done by the recipient.
Privilege and oppression are just about the most influential forces each of us will encounter in our lives.
Fortunately some of us work to oppose oppression and extend privilege.
    *raises cup to JT*

Yep. Me and my medical problems agree with this a whole hell of a lot.

JT, you blogged that. You weren’t drunk.

This is the atheists’ heaven. And the theists keep screwing it up to prepare for THEIRS.

You should get drunk more often, JT. :)
