Astrology portal launches at Patheos.

So, this is a thing now.

We are pleased to announce that Patheos has partnered with to launch an Astrology Offering at The Patheos Astrology coverage will offer a Daily Horoscope, a Daily Tarot Card feature, Astrology Commentary from Patheos Contributors, Lunar Phases, Monthly Forecasts and detailed information on each sun sign.

Patheos is all about the conversation.  I’m glad they acknowledge that the conversation can include requests for evidence and conclusions of “that’s bullshit” when the evidence either sucks or is non-existent.

Because looking into my crystal ball, I predict that’s what’s about to happen.  A lot.

Holy effing shite! How can astrology have any place in anything but the pontifications of idiots? Well, what else do you expect from a pack of accommodationists!? This must be as low as it goes for Patheos. Right? Right??

    • Drakk

Don’t push it, it might be flat earthers next.

  • Glodson

As someone who has seriously studied astronomy, and is studying physics, let me say this: what the fuck?

    • Rakatosh

Do you mean “What the fuck is Patheos doing, giving a platform to that nonsense?” Or “What the fuck JT, why are you criticizing astrology?”

      • Glodson

The first. Sorry, I guess I didn’t make it clear. There’s just simply no justification for it. On any level. And the goddamn Zodiac signs are wrong, since they are meant to be the constellations the Sun is in at about the time of your birth. Well, thanks to the precession of the revolution of the Earth the dates should have changed thanks to this shift, and there should be 13 signs, Ophiuchus the Serpent-bearer, which was even acknowledged by Ptolemy. None of this is exactly new news, as the shift of about twenty something degrees of our poles has since the Zodiac was established has been known for well over 100 years. Maybe longer.

Don’t get me wrong, Astrology had value in that it did lead to Astronomy, and all that. But we might as well have a fucking Alchemy page.

        • UsingReason

Let’s not forget the Phrenology column, maybe some entrail readings as well.

          • Zinc Avenger (Sarcasm Tags 3.0 Compliant)

I’m reminded of Terry Pratchett’s footnote joke about “retrophrenology”, where someone can make an appointment with a man who has a phrenology chart and a hammer, and place an order for intelligence, with a side of compassion.

        • John Horstman

I second the request for an Alchemy portal on Patheos. I have such a large quantity of base metals I need to transmute to more valuable metals, and I’m having no luck with chicken gizzards nor crocodile gallbladders.

        • Rakatosh

Yeah I thought that was probably what you meant, but I had to ask. Astrology is amusing, but holy shit people believe it. The day I learned that, my mind was blown.

          • Glodson

Me too. I always thought people read it for the hell of it. Even as a kid, I figured that everyone born in roughly the same month as me couldn’t have the same personalities, or “futures.” And they were always uselessly vague.

It is the same as the whole psychics thing. But at least I don’t look on Astrology with the same disdain as I’ve not seen an astrologer try to “solve” a case or speak for the dead.

On an unrelated note, not only should there be a phrenology page, an alchemy page, but why not one on dowsing, Palm Reading, Tarot Cards, Casting Bones, Ouija Boards, Numerology, and all that other assorted bullshit? God, if those pages already exist, I’m just going to have to drink harder. Sorry, new to Patheos, I kinda came for the JT.

        • J. J. Ramsey

I don’t know. An alchemy page could be kinda cool. Maybe get some Amestrian bloggers on the subject. :-)

Sigh. Maybe I just watch too much anime.

      • Azkyroth

        ….he said he’d studied, didn’t he?

  • Anonymous

Dude you can’t tell me astrology is fake, else how could this dude have used it to prove that Obama is the current American president? Yeah, this should be fun.

  • Gordon

Wait, you’re saying there are untrue beliefs on patheos?

  • Stevarious

Can’t say as I’m surprised, really.

What exactly is the difference between pages on astrology and pages on “Jesus loves you?”

    • Drakk

I suppose it’s the fact that one of them presents itself as a scientifically provable fact despite being utterly incoherent, whereas the latter is mostly just feelgood stuff that you’re supposed to believe in just because faith.

    • Schaden Freud

That’s a good question and I can see why you might conclude there’s no difference at all. For me, the difference is that the godbots are actually engaged in conversation about their beliefs, even if said conversation makes no sense to me. In contrast, giving a daily horoscope or “monthly forecast” or guide to the zodiac signs and their significance is clearly meant to be taken as hard and fast fact rather than an exploration of a blogger’s personal beliefs.

  • Nick Gotts

OK, you chose to move your blog to this home of ludicrous bullshit, because the money’s good. Why are you now complaining about a particular kind of ludicrous bullshit?

    • JT Eberhard

Yes, because I definitely don’t complain about all the other ludicrous bullshit too. Gold star for you.

      • Nick Gotts

No, by and large, you don’t complain about the ludicrous bullshit produced by the other Patheos bloggers. Looking through your posts since you moved here, I see in your first one you mention three other bloggers in a way that suggests disagreement, and later there’s a couple of posts disagreeing with one Dalrymple about abortion. So, what’s so special about an astrology portal that requires a characterization from you as “bullshit”, which all the religious bullshit blogs don’t?

        • JT Eberhard

Because religious stupidity, which makes up the majority of my content, occurs outside of Patheos as well. In 9 months at FtB I went after two posts on Patheos. In less than one month on Patheos I’ve gone after their whole astrology portal and their director of content.

Gold star number 2 for you, killer.

    • Glodson

Well, reading JT’s blog for awhile now makes me suspect he was hired to complain about all types of ludicrous bullshit, aka religion. Astrology is just another flavor.

  • ah58

Personally, I don’t think the person who runs the astrology portal will allow any comments of a disparaging nature. In fact, so far there are no comments at all which is a bit strange considering your post and also the one by PZ. My guess is they’ll all be moderated away.

  • Ubi Dubium

When do we get a Pastafarian Portal? It has just as much truth value as astrology.

Actually, I appreciate their opening an astrology portal. It’s a challenge to all of those people who are so comfortable with the idea that their religion is right, but all those other crazy supernatural claims are not. Let’s put them all on an equal footing and make the “serious religionists” justify why their beliefs are less loony then astrology. Every time we gently poke at a religious person’s “dam of faith” we might open a tiny crack, or enlarge one that’s already there. Eventually, with enough poking, that dam may give way, reality rushes in, and we get another deconvert.

This is not an agree point. I am not agree on this point the Astrology is an evil or bad. It is sometime prove to be good for one. Because some people not believe inLove Vashikaran Specialist astrology. That is the reason that they don’t make agree with this. So one use it then make your belief in this.

I have a watch with a broken mechanism. It is precisely correct twice daily. When astrology can match that accuracy, get back to us.
