God is abusive and sick.

Presented without additional comment.

A set of things abusive spouses say juxtaposed against god saying them.

To be fair, the character as created by the ancient Hebrews is a sick bastard, and it is the expression of a deeply sick culture. And to the extent that modern people embrace religion, they are sick as well.

The other thing that gets me is that in any healthy relationship, there’s room for both parties to criticize each other. “Criticism” doesn’t have to mean anything nasty, just expressing an opinion like “could we turn up the heat a little bit in the winter?” or “Could we just stay in tonight?” In a healthy relationship, we expect straight answers to questions like “could you pick me up after work?” or “could you do the dishes?”

Somehow, God gets out of all that. Anything god does or lets happen is automatically okay and you can’t say anything against it. No straight answers – ask god for something and it doesn’t happen, no right to criticize at all. It’s a picture of a relationship most people would just ditch. If you look at it from the “god is disgusted by your sin” we typically avoid people with unrealistic standards who can’t stop nit-picking.

Conclusion: God is nothing more than an abusive partner.

Not that the sex was worth it, anyway. (Been there, done that, survived.)

The entire original sin thing is a total “shoot the bunny”.
