Why there were no legal columns today.

For those of you who came to the blog today for Anne’s usual legal columns, she has a legitimate excuse.  Last week a group of men broke into her home and robbed her at gunpoint.

Four of the five of them are now in custody but, as you can imagine, it is a very time-consuming ordeal.  I asked Anne if she needed us to do a fundraiser for her and, thankfully, her insurance will cover everything.

Sadly, they also got away with her favorite piece of jewelry.  Affectionately named “the Goddess”, many high profile atheists have had their picture taken with it.  Here’s one with me and Teresa MacBain.

I know that the Goddess meant a great deal to Anne.  I wish we could do more than just offer sympathy and support, but that seems to be all that’s available at the moment.

Anne feels sorry she doesn’t have her blogs up for today, but I’ve told her that writing here is something we do for fun, not an obligation.  I’ve told her that if she wants two days next week or to not post for a month, either is ok with me.  So I don’t know when Anne will be back but, in the meantime, leave her some love to come home to.

Darn, that’s a Bad Thing (TM). I hope Good Things (TM) happen soon.

Sorry, I came across as too flippant, rather than humorously supportive as I intended.

Please acceptmy apology, and mentally modify the tone of voice in my comment above to that which best fits my explicit intent.

The humorous support came across loud and clear. Thank you!

That’s a terrible thing to have happened. I have had my place broken into and robbed before and it sucks, but luckily I wasn’t home. I can’t imagine the trauma of being robbed at gunpoint. If they caught most of the guys, can’t some of the things be recovered? Do you know if this was a random robbery or if she was targeted based on her work?

    Holy Shit!
I was deeply disturbed (it’s been several years) when we had our house broken into. We were new to the neighborhood, not home, and aside from some special to us costume jewelry we had little stolen (yes we used have essentially nothing with street or pawn value). At gun point and with multiple assailants is a whole another league of awful. I’m very happy they arrested some of them and that you’re well enough to post a comment.

Glad you’re okay, Anne, and hurry back because we already miss your insights.

The robbery looks to have been random. One of my neighbors was robbed in pretty much the same manner a couple of nights later. Three men have been arrested; a warrant has issued for a fourth. I’m going to be happy to testify against them, and my poor kidnapped Goddess will smite them with her sparkly indifference.

Anne: Very sorry to hear this happened and happy that you are okay.

  • Marie the Bookwyrm

Ye gads, that’s horrible! So glad to hear you’re okay. Hope you get your Goddess back soonest.

That sounds awful! My roommate was robbed at gunpoint while walking home from a bar and it shook him up pretty badly, and not just in the short term. I can only imagine that robbery in what’s meant to be a safe space would be even worse. Well-wishes for you, Anne!

Oh no! Absolutely terrible. Glad to hear that most of them are caught, here’s hoping the other one is nabbed soon. If there’s anything this readership can do for you (maybe help cover your insurance deductible?), don’t hesitate to let us know right away.

That’s horrible – I hope the police nab the last guy and you get the Goddess back soon!
