Testing a psychic

I’m a big fan of James Randi, and his work in exposing the fraud that is psychics and every form of woo. This talk show host takes an mighty fine approach as well. It’s not English, but you’ll get the idea.

HOST: So you’re a psychic*? You can foresee the future, correct?
PSYCHIC: Exactly, I can foresee the future.
HOST: [Slaps psychic] And this? Did you foresee this? [To audience] As you can see, it’s not hard to expose a charlatan.

*I’m translating the Spanish subtitles of the French audio, as I don’t speak sufficient French to do direct captioning; the literal translation of “adivino” is “one who divines”, referring to an ability to predict the future; “psychic” might not be the best translation, as many psychics claim abilities unrelated to prognostication; “diviner” or “soothsayer” may be more accurate, though “psychic” is the preferred term in English for those who perform as professional entertainers claiming to predict the future

Your translation is not far from the mark. At the end, he says, “Pas besoin de long debats pour démystifier les charlatans”, which is a little more elaborate than your translation: “No need for long debates to demystify charlatans”. But overall the translation is pretty good.

I do get the feeling that this is a comedy act, and not a real event, though.

Indeed, this is part of a french comedy show called “Groland”. It’s quite famous in France for its pretty graphic and irrevent humour.
