Cop demoted for refusing to pray.

In San Juan, a cop is suing his precinct for demoting him after he refused to participate in compulsory prayer to Jesus.

The complaint (PDF) alleges that officer Alvin Marrero-Mendez’s superior officers often engaged in religious activities during precinct meetings, including an officially sponsored prayer. Specifically, it alleges that officer Mendez was asked to give a prayer before a group of officers and when he refused, he was told to leave formation and stand in front of his peers while a superior officer mocked him for rejecting Christianity.

Minus the threat of demotion/punishment, it would have to be the funniest thing in the world to have a bunch of people who believe a guy rose from the dead 2,000 years ago and walked on water making fun of you.  How does that even work?  Ooooooooooooh, look at the guy who thinks snakes don’t talk!  Why don’t you show us your pet snake that doesn’t talk, smart guy.

Correct answer to every attempt at mockery: dude, you believe someone rose from the dead, and you lack the self-awareness to realize how stupid that is.

The sad part is that this belief in a dead person walking the Earth as a focal point of all morality is so common that when we mock it, it goes unnoticed by most. They don’t get why we are laughing at the notion.

Religion wraps reality for those that believe it. Here’s hoping that cop wins his suit.

Too bad the poor guy didn’t stand there and say:

Our reading from Holy Scripture today is from the sixth chapter of Matthew:

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.

Dominionism, deliberately infiltrating every authoritarian organization near you, because everybody needs to *believe* whether they want to or not.

Perhaps a prayer to the dark lord satan would have been in order, or maybe allah, or how about shiva. Surely since he had led a prayer they wouldn’t have had any problem right?
