Tim Minchin: a popular and obscure song.

Tim Minchin has finally posted a video of his hit song “Thank You God”.  It will give you all the lulz.

However, it’s not my favorite song Minchin has ever done.  Whenever Minchin gets brought up, I talk about my favorite song of his and nobody seems to know it.  Thankfully there’s a video of it up, at least for the time being.  Enjoy.  :)

“Thank you God” is probably my favorite Minchin song, but “The Fence” is definitely one of his catchiest tunes, for sure.

FINALLY! I was devastated when all of the reason rally footage was taken down of this song. I’ve been eagerly anticipating it ever since.

Is it just me though, or is his performance better when it’s just him and his piano, without the elaborate ensemble? All of the epic excess really detracts from the lyric, which is really the important part of his show. He’s putting on a damn comedy show, not fan-faring before the kings coronation.

I would agree with you on all songs except Not Perfect. The version from Live at the O2 was gorgeous, and I think made more so by the orchestral stuff. Otherwise, yes, it’s a lot of flash that distracts from him.

When you play with an Orchestra, you need to be a lot more controlled, and the timing is pretty critical. Even with the best conductor, and the best orchestra, a soloist who takes too many liberties is going to screw it for everyone. So part of what you’re getting is the fact that he’s not as free as he would normally be, and has to think about timing more than he normally would.
But then there’s the impact of the sound of the orchestra on his voice. Singing against an orchestra is no easy task, and as much as Tim has a great voice, he’s not trained specifically for that task. So he just doesn’t manage to project over the orchestra.

There’s is a version of canvas bags that he did, for what seems to be a benefit concert, which included part-way through a full choir, a trumpet and pyrotechnics. I enjoy it greatly, simply because it’s such a silly little song and the pure absurdity of putting all of that together for it.

The Fence definitely doesn’t get enough props!

“Storm” is my favorite ever video he made, though it’s not a song. Check it out, it’s a great demolishing of general non-scientific thought, religious or otherwise.

Storm makes me happy. I like it for when i need a mood pick me up.

One nym I’ve used from time to time is “DwellerontheThreshold.” It’s a nod to me not really fitting in with pretty much any group. I’m terrible at getting in line with groups and gab on endlessly about nuance and context. I’ve also been known to go by “TheWretched” since that’s how most folks see me after a while.

I had never actually listened to that one. So I checked and, yep, sitting there on my iPod, never played. Need to correct that now. Thanks for sharing.

Simply one of the greatest indictments of the narcissism of prayer that I’ve ever heard.

I like the message in Fence, the song on the other hand isn’t quite to my tastes. Not like it’s bad or anything, I just think Tim has better ones.

My favorite is still “If I didn’t have you”

    Available on youtube
won’t put in a link in case it embeds the video but here’s the video ID.

My favorite is Zombie Woody Allen Jesus.

I love almost everything Tim Minchin does but nothing will ever replace White Wine in the Sun as one of my all time favourite songs. Any genre. Any artist.
