More Muslims injuring young girls for having the audacity to pursue an education.

This lunacy happened again.

About 150 Afghan schoolgirls were poisoned on Tuesday after drinking contaminated water at a high school in the country’s north, officials said, blaming it on conservative radicals opposed to female education.

What is there to say?  Stories like this are coming out all the time.  But no amount of them will ever seem to convince the “nice” (read: passive aggressive) atheists that Islam is bad for the world.  I have no need to comment on how terrible this is, we all already know.

Instead, all I can do is once again invite the apologists for Islam to come and tell me why I shouldn’t think Islam is barbaric.  All they can ever say is that there are Muslims in the world who ignore the sexism of their scriptures.  Good!  They all should, for their scriptures are evil.  Without Islam, we’d still have people who think women deserve an equal opportunity at education, but we wouldn’t have the throwing of acid into the faces of women who want an education and we sure as shit wouldn’t have people poisoning young girls for the crime of learning.

The “beauty” the apologists of religion, including Islam, use to defend the faith actually belongs to humanity.  The irony is that they use that beauty to whitewash the horrors against humanity to which Islam owns the deeds.

Every damn time I hear/read someone saying that we atheists borrow our values from religion I want to scream. We do not borrow your values. You use humanistic values to make your religion look prettier. Gender equality does not come from religion, free education does not come from religion, social justice does not come from religion. All these things have been established or are in the process of being established IN SPITE OF religion. If the organised religions had not adjusted their teachings according to humanistic values we’d still be stuck in biblical times.

They also ask us what justifies atheist morals. If a more is mutually beneficial to all then it is self-justified. If it is detrimental or oppressive then the more requires a religious basis to be maintained.

“All they can ever say is that there are Muslims in the world who ignore the sexism of their scriptures.”

Doesn’t work. Those types of Muslims ALSO conveniently ignore the sexism being perpetrated by the other more radical Muslims.

I have been reading about these cases quite a lot. The vast majority seem to be much more in line with classic mass hysteria cases instead of poisoning cases. No toxins found in water, air, or building and that’s after extensive testing. First one girl, then two, then a whole bunch. The symptoms are relatively mild- fits, headaches, some mild seizing, but not unconsciousness, severe foaming at the mouth, uncontrollable vomiting, and death.

That doesn’t make it not-real, of course. We know these episodes happen under severe stress, and any teenage girl in Afghanistan is pretty much by definition under severe stress. The girls are really hurting, and they really do need treatment, just different types than anti-poisoning protocols. I’m just saying this *may* not be an example of religious bullshit.

EDIT: Ok, that specific case (in 2012, fyi, not new but still should be news) looks like actual poisoning. There have been several other cases that probably weren’t, though, so I’m going to leave what I said before still intact while recognizing that this particular case is a real mass poisoning.

Christians will just expel all the female students so they have to be dependent on men for their livelihoods.
