Exodus International closes, apologized to LGBT people.

Holy shit!  “Pray away the gay” group Exodus International has not only closed up shop, but they’ve actually apologized to LGBT people!

The closure comes less than a day after Exodus released a statement apologizing to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community for years of undue judgment, by the organization and from the Christian Church as a whole.

“Exodus is an institution in the conservative Christian world, but we’ve ceased to be a living, breathing organism. For quite some time we’ve been imprisoned in a worldview that’s neither honoring toward our fellow human beings, nor biblical,” said Alan Chambers, president of Exodus.

I don’t swallow the idea that opposing gay people is not biblical.  The book actually calls for the deaths in Exodus, the chapter of the bible after which the organization was named.  But still, good on them for coming around.  This is progress!

It appears that their introspection and soul searching is caused mostly by a dearth of donations, right now.

While I can’t find any recent financial info, it’s been going on for a while (from 2011):

The bank account is the window into the soul.

        But, of course.

Thank you for that find. It certainly goes a long way towards explaining such a sudden turnaround.

    “Hey everybody,

Sorry for all the psychological trauma and destruction of lives! Our bad!

    Peace out, yo”

Edit: This might be more accurate:

    “Hey everybody,

Sorry, but causing all you gay peeps psychological trauma is no longer bringing in the Benjamins.

Apology + shutting down + re-branding into a new organization = orchestrated media blitz. But yeah progress. Not too long ago it would have been almost unthinkable for high-profile fundies to say such things.

Don’t celebrate too much. As Exodus was becoming ‘kinder’ to GLBT people many fundamentalist groups broke away and formed the Restored Hope Network: http://www.restoredhopenetwork.com

There are also groups in other countries that they started and that will go on by themselves in one form or another.
