No blogging today.

No blogging today.  I’m at the dentist while Michaelyn is getting her wisdom teeth out and I’ll spend the rest of the day taking care of her.  :)

Will respond to Jen McCreight tomorrow and catch up on news stories from today.

Ouch. Hope she feels better soon.

  • Gehennah

Take care of her, and I hope they give her the good stuff to deal with the pain over the next few days.

JT, I tried to post this last night but it wouldn’t go thru. I am lacking in tech skills. I just bought the software to download the videos to my harddrive and I’ll get this done when I get around to it. I’m retired, I’m on my schedule, this can fester for awhile. We’ll all see who the fools are. I am so impressed by all the skeptics who have this situation figured out although they have little information. That other blog is maybe the most rude and childish group on line today. For Jen to allow that thread to boil reveals her character further. I have a much better understanding what is wrong with freethought in America today. All her brilliant fans who have painted me a racist white motherfucker are amusing. All racism is unadulterated nationalism. Herman Goering explained this quite well at the Nuremburg trials. To control the populace you only need to prop up an enemy. If racism is reduced down to a simple black and white issue myopia is achieved. The current enemy is Arabic people and it appears the Persian people are next in line. America is the current empire in decline as it overextends globally militarily as infrastructure collapses here. Yet educated sheep continue to believe infinite economic growth is possible on a finite planet. You’ll have to excuse me for dragging you to my back yard for that last supper of swill but that’s where I wanted to digest the
weekend. I hope as Bria writes her side of the story, she will remember what she said to me after a woman jumped on me at Bria’s meetup. Here is Judy’s egregious quote and I’ll post Mandisa’s response to her tomorrow. I’ll post the videos when they’re done with no editing.
“I don’t know if this is off the subject or not but I was wondering what your group might be doing with the black on black crime? The church has not been able to do anything and it’s just terrible, especially in Chicago. I mean I understand there are something like 20, 30 murders, you know a month. Uh, I mean that’s like 1 a day. Toledo may be a little better but certainly we have our problems so, what are you and your community ——- are you addressing this in any way, how?”

    • Peggy Clancy

      Mark (Farris), is that you?

    • Kengi

Oh, good. The privileged white jerk is here to whitesplain racism to the uppity black folk.

    • DrVanNostrand

Appealing to the authority of Goering for this theory about racism is one of the most unintentionally hilarious things I’ve ever read. Then after saying that all racism is just nationalism, you go on to lecture the rest of us about our simplistic understanding of racism! You are the Dunning Kruger effect personified. Nationalism can be an aspect, but racism is often so much more, including things like privilege, which blinds ignoramuses like you into thinking you know what the fuck you’re talking about. I do thank you for posting the question though. Now I know with even greater certainty that Bria was justifiably pissed off because of a blatantly racist, shitty question.

    • Edward Gemmer

Without trying to use a mind meld on this lady to determine her intent, there is a good question in there. What are atheists doing about crime? There was a celebration when a couple kids went to prison (i.e. Steubenville). There is a call for more rapists to be in prison. Other than that, there doesn’t seem to be much thought or concern about it at all.

      • Mandisa Thomas

        Greetings,
Mandisa Thomas here – the person to whom the Black on Black crime question was directed. My talk on the day in question was about how the Freethought community can learn from the Hospitality Industry – which was well received by the audience. I touched on my organization briefly, and I did not speak on the problems in the Black community that particular day. So for this woman to come out of left field and ask a question that wasn’t related to the subject at hand was not only rude, but it also implied that just because we are an orgainzation that focuses on Blacks that we are supposed to take on such a gigantic problem in our own. It also seemed to imply that I should ONLY be speaking on issues relating to the Black community. She may not have been meaning to come across as insidious or oblivious, but I also don’t think she was paying attention to my presentation, or even cared much about the issue at hand. She certainly did not speak with me afterwards to either clarify, or even offer assistance on such efforts. I certainly did not go off on her, but she receives no sympathy from me either.

        • islandbrewer

Not having been there, I was clueless of the context and thinking, “Oh, this must have been a talk on .. um, crime, or problems specific to the black community, or something where ‘black on black crime’ would make even vague sense.”

Now that question sounds not only racist, but bizarre.

        • invivoMark

I’m sorry you had to endure such a brain-mushingly stupid and insensitive question! No matter where the clusterfuck following it leads, I think it’s absolutely bullshit that anyone could think that it was an okay question to ask, or that that was the proper venue for it; and moreover, no one should have to deal with that kind of unprompted verbal dreck.

        • Edward Gemmer

What? Your existence isn’t to be a walking encyclopedia for everything white people want to know about black people? Surely you jest.

          • Mandisa Thomas

Lol, Edward she seemed to think so. I guess I should now pull out my BN cape and go resolve all Black on Black crime right now! ;-)

          • Edward Gemmer

Don’t do that! I’d be out of a job!

        • Azkyroth

          JT failed to mention that…

          • cityzenjane

“My talk on the day in question was about how the Freethought community can learn from the Hospitality Industry”

Yes but….what are you going to do about the high incidence of fried chicken related heart disease among your people?

(OK WAIT. Before I get flamed…this is a glancing reference to other news of White People BS today…Our cup runneth over.)

            http://www.politicususa.com/2013/08/22/colorado-state-senator-blames-poverty-black-people-eating-fried-chicken.html

Mandisa, I am sorry this happened. And I am sorry some have reacted so poorly to yourself and Bria pointing out the problem.

If people are repeater stations for racist talking points WE ALL have a responsibility to point that problem out. What we do NOT have a responsibility or right to – is to tell Black people HOW to respond to people behaving like racism repeater stations.

    • Andrew S. Williams

Wow, you hit Godwin’s Law, Poe’s Law, and Sturgeon’s Law all in one post. Any other Internet laws you added in there? (BTW, thanks for not going for Rule 34)

  • Lurker111

Whenever anyone talks to me about “Intelligent Design,” I like to just say, “Two words: Wisdom teeth.”

  • Peggy Clancy

I hope Michaelyn feels better soon. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

  • quickshot

Incite a firestorm involving race! Leave us hanging for the next part!!

If I didn’t know any better, I might think you are intentionally trying to keep people glued to your blog!

Also, better have a good response. You were officially waxed by Jen.

    • DrVanNostrand

“You were officially waxed by Jen”… and Greta Christina and Dana Hunter, and I’m sure the list will grow.

    • Azkyroth

I don’t know. It looks like most of the people responding decided to process JT’s more specific and nuanced, but still, I think, problematic, critique as “SHE WAS TOO ANGRY” because of some combination of pattern-pouncing and It’s Easier.

Also, I see a hell of a lot of people basically asserting that either a less-privileged person Cannot Be Wrong on the topic of the privilege in question, or at least that a person with that privilege can never point it out competently, and I know no one ACTUALLY believes that because people tell me how to feel about allistic privilege and displays thereof and the intentions of non-autistics ALL. THE. FUCKING. TIME. People, including a few of the louder voices on this subject.

    • baal

I usually have to pay to get waxed. It’s worth it for the later smoothness.

  • Peggy Clancy

@Mark Farris (1nomo) Please stop this. I can’t tell you how upsetting this is to the good people who worked so hard to put on and attend a truly wonderful Great Lakes Atheist Convention.

@everyone else, please know that this individual has no standing to represent the Great Lakes Atheist Convention.

    • Kengi

      Thank you for the clarification.

    • Edward Gemmer

Hey, the conference sounds awesome. Yelling, crying, old guys talking about Nazis – I’m so there next year.

  • Msironen

“Will respond to Jen McCreight tomorrow”

Why, oh why? Offering explanation or worse yet defending yourself aren’t legal moves; they are rule violations. You of all people should know this by now.

To quote a certain Tony Stark, there is no version of this where you come out on top.

  • Jasper

I hate to say it, but you’re better off cutting your losses. The biggest mistake you made is daring to have an opinion on anything.

It’s very difficult to hold a position that isn’t 100% synchronized with their points of view, without incurring a scorched-earth policy.
