Rally to defund Obamacare…wasn’t exactly a hit.

The enrollment date for the Affordable Care Act (Oct. 1) is drawing near, which means GOP lawmakers are driving themselves into even more of a frenzy trying to pass the same defunding bills that have failed FSM-knows how many times.  That includes putting pressure on Congress, which is what Ran Paul and Ted Cruz hoped to do with the really to defund Obamacare.  Even Pat Robertson got in on the act, saying there would be thousands in attendance.

Behold, thousands:

Yes, thousands…and one lady on the right side who looks like she wandered into the shot lost. So thousands minus one…

I know, I know…Pat Robertson was really wrong about something.  Try to pull yourself together.

This reminds me of that time the American Family Association put on an ex-gay rally that was supposed to have drawn *ahem* thousands.  I wonder if it was all the same people who attended both…

The Tea Party will win some local and state elections, but on the national stage they’re the equivalent of a toddler on a tricycle in the Indy 500 (and they have about as much chance of winning).  The upcoming generation, which wasn’t raised in a society awash in discriminatory tradition, has fresh eyes – eyes that look for equality and compassion for their fellow human beings.  And there just ain’t enough old time religion left to unmake that reality.

I hope the image files stand through time. I’m imagining a future historian looking back and going, “news reports at the tiem were mixed about attendance so let’s split the difference between a few handfuls of people and tens of thousands and call it good.”

Has anyone asked Glenn Beck if god showed up to this one too?

I can’t agree. They control the House of Representatives and as such they have been capable of grinding government to a halt. As this article in Slate points out ( http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2013/09/almanac_of_american_politics_a_biennial_reference_book_explains_why_we_re.html ) we will probably be stuck with this situation for at least eight more years.

Can you imagine the damage they will cause in another eight years? Climate Change is a real and present danger but we had eight years of doing nothing under Bush followed by four years of doing nothing under Obama; can we really afford eight more years of doing nothing?

The Tea Party is political guerrilla war; they don’t win by winning , they win by preventing the other side from winning. You are right in that they are the last gasp of the old guard. They will die off and be replaced by the emerging generation that won’t share their world view but the damage they will do in their twelve year run will show them to be one of the most influential and effective political movements this country has seen.
