Austin City Council candidate attacks supposedly ‘self admitted atheist’ opponent

The run-off race for Austin City Council District 4 is probably not something most people, especially outside of Austin, will pay much attention to, including myself. The race is between Laura Pressley and Gregorio Casar. Casar led Pressley with an impressive 39-22 lead in the November 4th election, commencing the run-off that is set to [Read More…]

Christian homeless shelter appears to be exploiting residents as cheap labor and taking their social security/food stamps.

New Beginnings is a Christian homeless shelter in Florida which arranges for those using its services to work on behalf of the shelter to make an honest living.  There’s just one problem: the money the shelter gets to pay its workers doesn’t seem to find its way into the hands of the workers. A Christian-based [Read More…]

Rocker who threw a beer bottle at his wife’s head upset about America’s “soul sickness.”

Scott Stapp, the front man for the band Creed, recently posted (and removed) a video from his facebook page lamenting the “soul sickness” of America. Debate (Do the findings of science entail that Christianity is false?): John Lepp’s first rebuttal.

Here is John Lepp’s first rebuttal. My opening. John’s opening. My first rebuttal Let’s go over some basics on who has the burden of proof:  The debate topic is “Do the findings of science entail that Christianity is false?”  Whoever is making an assertion of fact has the burden of proof.  The assertion is “Science [Read More…]

American Atheists “blessing” the South with some wisdom-bearing billboards.

The American South will be getting a message from American Atheists starting today and running through Dec. 24th: Continuing its tradition of “firebrand-style” billboards at Christmastime, American Atheists launched a new campaign in Bible Belt cities, beginning Monday. The billboards feature a young girl writing a letter to Santa; her letter reads, “Dear Santa, All [Read More…]

Your morning happiness: dawgs.

I’m back.  What a holiday.  Lots of driving, but lots of good time with family and friends.  Time to start getting caught back up with what’s going on in the world.  Maybe it will all be happy. But just in case, on the off chance it’s all depressing, here are a couple of pictures from [Read More…]

Finland getting with the times: The Finnish Parliament voted on Friday afternoon to allow gender-neutral marriage, 105-92. The vote had been expected to be closer. Fundamentalist Christians hate ISIS, yet they have so much in common…

Hey everybody!  Just checking in from the road.  Last night we played Cards Against Humanity with Michaelyn’s mom, brothers, and sister-in-law, who are some of my favorite people.  They’re the kind that just make you smile all the time you’re around them. Today we’re hanging out with my mother-in-law, Diane, before making the journey north [Read More…]

Atheist Thanksgiving.

Welp, it’s Thanksgiving – time to sit around and ruminate over what we’re thankful for, right?  How about this year we all take a moment and acknowledge what we’re thankful for in the atheist movement? I’m thankful to Sam Harris.  It was his book The End of Faith that made me into an activist.  On [Read More…]

Why Republicans appeal marriage equality cases they know they’re going to lose.

This comment from LARK62 made my day.  It captures concisely and specifically why GOP governors/AGs continue to push and appeal to Circuit Courts which have already ruled against other states making the same arguments: It was, is and always will be a way for politicians to pander to right wing voters. And since the appeals [Read More…]

Bryan Fischer is not happy about the decisions in Arkansas and Mississippi.

Bryan Fischer is hungry for discrimination which, in the wake of Arkansas and Mississippi having their gay marriage bans overturned by federal judges yesterday, prompted the head of the American Family Association to toss a spectacular word salad. “The federal judiciary has mutated into a gargantuan beast, looming over liberty, freedom and the Constitution itself… [Read More…]

The Importance of Community

Now that I’ve had a few days to unwind from my second Skepticon and reflect on it, I thought I would talk about it because my opinion is relevant and everybody cares. 😉 As someone who lives in an area that is predominantly Christian, as I’m sure many of you do, it’s a bit of a shock [Read More…]
