Ray Comfort capitalizing on a man’s suicide to spread lies about mental illness and life.

Ralph Barton was a popular cartoonist who shot himself in 1931.  Ray Comfort is now using his suicide to dig at atheists and, in doing so, to elevate Christianity. Makes sense since no Christian has ever committed suicide.  Wait a minute… Sadly, if Comfort had bothered to do any research, he would’ve learned that the [Read More...]

Cranston to get new banners. People who said it wasn’t about god are hacked off the new murals don’t include god.

The same graduating class which provided Cranston West High School with their nefarious prayer murals which Jessica Ahlquist so bravely challenged (a challenge in which she was declared the swift victor by a conservative Catholic judge) has gifted the school two new banners which don’t break the law. The mural does not contain any religious [Read More...]

Apostacon has set the standard for atheist conferences.

In 2008 (and really in 2009 at Skepticon 2), my friends and I conceived of a conference that would become the model for many other groups.  It was Skepticon, and it introduced a slew of new ideas to the conference format.  Forgive me a moment of pride when I say it changed things. Apostacon is [Read More...]

Your morning happiness: Corgi vs. ball.

My posts generally tend to highlight faith’s massive destructive capability in a world shared by faithful and people of no faith.  This can get pretty depressing.  Thankfully, I have a fiance (and a mother) who send me all kinds of happy stuff throughout the day to make sure I don’t become the type who begins [Read More...]

On our way to Apostacon!

Hello everybody! Here in a couple of hours Michaelyn and I will be wending our way toward Omaha for that pirate-fest of a convention: Apostacon.  This will double as a sort of anniversary celebration for us, so we’re both hella excited.  I’ve got a couple talks I’m considering giving, so it’ll just have to be [Read More...]

Mom will be able to name her child Messiah.

Last month an Alabama judge ruled that a mother couldn’t name her child Messiah because “Messiah” is a title reserved for Jesus Christ.  Naturally the mom appealed and, thankfully, the ruling was overturned. Chancellor Telford Fogerty ruled Wednesday that the name change violated the constitutional separation of church and state, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported. [Read More...]

Pope says Catholic Church too obsessed with abortion, gay marriage, and contraception.

The pope made headlines again by saying that the Catholic Church is too obsessed with gay rights: Pope Francis, in the first extensive interview of his six-month-old papacy, said that the Roman Catholic church had grown “obsessed” with preaching about abortion, gay marriage and contraception, and that he has chosen not to speak of those [Read More...]

Ken Ham says Bill Nye doesn’t understand science.

Ken Ham has taken another giant step towards securing himself a spot at the lack of self-awareness Olympics.  Ham just edged out porn stars accusing nuns of immodesty when he said: Australian “young Earth” creationist pastor Ken Ham said on Facebook Tuesday that Bill Nye “The Science Guy” does not “understand science correctly” because Nye [Read More...]

John McCain blasts Putin in Russian newspaper.

When I wrote about Vladimir Putin’s op ed in the New York Times, I said: I think it was largely disingenuous, since it’s kind of obvious that Syria (which houses a key Russian military base) is an area of great political importance for Russia.  It’s sad, because the reasons Putin gave for opposing America rattling [Read More...]

TheoreticalBS responds to Pascal’s Wager.

This guy is my new hero.  Like, this guy is David Tenant levels of awesome. What a magnificent line to describe god: “A being whose empathy is so easily trumped by his vanity.”  This guy makes me feel like I’m borrowing the English language. [Read more...]

State of Michigan claims the right to regulate sexual relationships.

A man is challenging the gay marriage ban in the state of Michigan.  So the state has responded…with this: “One of the paramount purposes of marriage in Michigan — and at least 37 other states that define marriage as a union between a man and a woman — is, and has always been, to regulate [Read More...]

More music: Just No Time At All.

Ok, getting into the news, but I woke up in a really good mood and this song popped into my head.  It’s Just No Time At All from the musical Pippin. I’ve never been a fan of the style of singing that focuses purely on making the best possible sound.  I think music becomes so [Read More...]

Christopher Lee sings.

I have bad news: your life was not complete before this moment. I also have good news: I have the medicine, and it’s this video clip. That song is now in your head for the rest of the day.  You’re welcome. The clip is from an Australian film called The Return of Captain Invincible and [Read More...]

Christian for-profit business owners must obey the same laws as everybody else. Will the discrimination ever stop?

In the wake of new legislation insisting that employers must provide healthcare to full-time employees, many business owners sought an exemption.  It wasn’t just that they believed they shouldn’t be bound by the same laws as everybody else.  No, they thought they shouldn’t be bound by the same laws as everybody else because their objections [Read More...]
