Communicating the odds of this universe.

While it’s certainly a goal of mine to understand the pro-god arguments, my primary goal is to be able to communicate why I don’t buy them clearly and to people who may not have four PhDs.  So I had a thought this morning about how to respond to a believer who says the odds of [Read More…]

Your morning happiness: this dog is content.

The dumb thing about depression: you can be chugging along just fine and within the space of a few minutes be in tears for absolutely no reason.  This was me yesterday.  I’d had a couple of good days, was contacted by a therapist (which I’ll write about when I’m ready), and was optimistic about everything [Read More…]

Let’s talk about fallacies, baby

Steven here… This is a follow up to a previous post I did highlighting exceptions and false positive identifications of logical fallacies. Identifying logical fallacies is a powerful, if imperfect, tool for separating the truth from the bullshit. Reflecting on false positives can be a useful way of keeping yourself from using a list of [Read More…]

Now this is flattery.

This is almost too much to be believed.  I’m flattered to all hell, but this tweeter must be confused: If you can’t tell, that’s me being lumped in with Sam Harris, Christopher Hitchens, Bill Nye, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson.  What do you even say to something like that?  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think [Read More…]

Bill Donohue: CNN can’t criticize Catholic Church because their executives make millions.

There’s been an article from CNN making its way around the intertubes lately about how many top Catholic officials live in a fashion reminiscent of Baptist megapastors, i.e. lavishly.  VERY lavishly (as usual, Hemant has a great write-up).  There are presently 34 archbishops in the United States.  Of the 34, 10 live in a house [Read More…]

Pastor Rick Scarborough: god would be justified in dropping nuclear bomb on America because we have gay ambassadors.

The people that look to this man for guidance are likely largely skeptical of scientists.  Let that sink in for a minute. Why do religious fundamentalists get a reputation for being dumb?  It’s because if you took the suit off that pastor and put him on a street corner instead of in a multi-million dollar [Read More…]

Fourth consecutive county judge in Florida rules state ban unconstitutional.

Unlike other states, many of Florida’s lawsuits challenging the state’s gay marriage ban were filed in county courts.  That means the decisions in some of those cases are only binding to the county until they’re appealed to the state.  The good news is that the pro-equality crowd has won every suit that’s been ruled on, [Read More…]

Good news and bad news out of Oklahoma

Steven here… You may recall us talking about Scott Esk, Republican candidate for state representative? If you don’t here’s a refresher. Yeah, that guy. The one who thinks that we should straight up murder people for being gay. Anyway, the primary results are in. Esk lost his primary, and he lost so hard. This gives [Read More…]

Peter LaBarbera: god’s wrath coming to Sears.

Sears recently participated in Chicago’s gay pride parade.  According to Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality (an organization that spreads opinions that contradict those of every medical and psychological body in the developed world, so the name’s kind of ironic) this is going to move god to take a break from watching murderers, [Read More…]

UPDATE: Big gay marriage case to be decided in the 6th Circuit today.

The appeal of Michigan’s pro-marriage equality ruling will be decided today in the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals today.  This ruling will hold jurisdiction over four states: Michigan, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Ohio.  Tennessee and Kentucky won’t be happy if the legal winning streak of pro-equality advocates continues. On Wednesday, the historic civil rights case that [Read More…]

Put A Jesus On It!

One of the fun things you get to do when you have an English degree is move back in with your parents. For me, that meant moving back to the middle of nowhere. Everyone here is very religious and my town is mostly composed of old conservatives, since everyone under 30 tries to get out. [Read More…]

After two years, GOP-led committee investigating Benghazi finds…nothing.

So much mud the Republicans threw at Obama and none of it stuck.  Then there was Benghazi, a tragedy so, well, tragic, that the GOP couldn’t resist turning it into a political tool for their own gain.  Oh sure it was under the guise of wanting to do honor to the fallen, but pretty much [Read More…]

House Rep. from Mississippi sends a bible to every member of Congress.

A House Republican from Mississippi, Steven Palazzo, recently sent a bible to every member of Congress to “help guide them in their decision-making.” A Republican congressman recently sent a copy of the Holy Bible to every member of Congress “to help guide you in your decision-making,” according to a letter obtained by TPM. Rep. Steven [Read More…]
