Help a young atheist conservationist get educated!

I met Niki at a conference she was helping to run a while back.  She was extremely kind and a very hard worker.  And now she’s been accepted into the University of Exeter’s Animal Behavior Master’s program. It’s one of the only behavioral programs in the world that combines biology and psychology and, by that [Read More…]

Father on why young people, specifically, are rejecting religion.

Father linked to a good article this morning from, of all places, my conservative hometown paper.  The article discusses the implication for a society that is less religious than ever, and only becoming more so: The decline in religiosity is especially telling. When one considers how theistic beliefs typically are passed down from generation to [Read More…]

IRS settles with the FFRF, agrees to start cracking down on churches that play politics.

This is a huge win for the FFRF! The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has reached a settlement with a prominent atheist organization, agreeing to crack down churches and religious groups for infringements of its prohibition against  ‘electioneering.’ As previously reported, the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF), headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, sued the IRS in 2012, [Read More…]

Hey Southwest Airlines! This employee deserves a gajillion raises.

On my way home from giving a talk in Ohio on Sunday night I was sitting in the Columbus airport waiting on my flight when the flight at the next terminal over was canceled.  For those of us who fly a lot, we know these things happen.  Machines break, and airplanes are machines.  The responsible [Read More…]

10 year-old girl raped by Islamic Mullah, family considering killing the girl to atone.

Not even a million morning happiness posts could prepare someone for this. It was bad enough that the alleged rape took place in the sanctity of a mosque and that the accused man was a mullah who invoked the familiar defence that it had been consensual sex. But the victim was only 10 years old. [Read More…]

Kids raised in religious homes less capable of distinguishing fact from fiction.

Get your surprised faces ready: Results from a study published in the latest issue of Cognitive Science suggest that 5- and 6-year-old kids from religious backgrounds judge fact from fiction differently than those with non-religious upbringings. Unsurprisingly, when children were presented stories that depicted “ordinarily impossible events brought about by divine intervention,” kids who either [Read More…]

Iowa Governor, in official capacity, signs proclamation that all should pray biblically.

This is disgusting.  It is the abuse of a position of power that is supposed to represent all citizens equally eschewing every Iowan who is not a Christian: In a public ceremony earlier this year, Branstad signed the proclamation ahead of a July 14 revival at the Iowa Capitol: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terry E Branstad, [Read More…]

Your morning wtf?

No morning happiness today.  Yesterday was a long day so posts today are going to be short and sweet and then I’m going to stream games for a bit, since I’ve been going pretty hard for well over a week now.  So I’m all good and cynical and, with the help of the American Family [Read More…]

Happy birthday to one of the greatest activists you might not have heard of.

Today is the birthday of Lauren Lane, co-creator and current organizer of the Skepticon conference.  I’ve often said that some of the best, most efficient activists for our side are ones you seldom hear of: like Lyz Liddell, the force of nature that is the heart of the SSA or Amanda Knief with American Atheists.  [Read More…]
