10 year-old girl raped by Islamic Mullah, family considering killing the girl to atone.

Not even a million morning happiness posts could prepare someone for this. It was bad enough that the alleged rape took place in the sanctity of a mosque and that the accused man was a mullah who invoked the familiar defence that it had been consensual sex. But the victim was only 10 years old. [Read More…]

Kids raised in religious homes less capable of distinguishing fact from fiction.

Get your surprised faces ready: Results from a study published in the latest issue of Cognitive Science suggest that 5- and 6-year-old kids from religious backgrounds judge fact from fiction differently than those with non-religious upbringings. Unsurprisingly, when children were presented stories that depicted “ordinarily impossible events brought about by divine intervention,” kids who either [Read More…]

Iowa Governor, in official capacity, signs proclamation that all should pray biblically.

This is disgusting.  It is the abuse of a position of power that is supposed to represent all citizens equally eschewing every Iowan who is not a Christian: In a public ceremony earlier this year, Branstad signed the proclamation ahead of a July 14 revival at the Iowa Capitol: NOW, THEREFORE, I, Terry E Branstad, [Read More…]

Your morning wtf?

No morning happiness today.  Yesterday was a long day so posts today are going to be short and sweet and then I’m going to stream games for a bit, since I’ve been going pretty hard for well over a week now.  So I’m all good and cynical and, with the help of the American Family [Read More…]

Happy birthday to one of the greatest activists you might not have heard of.

Today is the birthday of Lauren Lane, co-creator and current organizer of the Skepticon conference.  I’ve often said that some of the best, most efficient activists for our side are ones you seldom hear of: like Lyz Liddell, the force of nature that is the heart of the SSA or Amanda Knief with American Atheists.  [Read More…]

Infinite Punishment for Finite Crime Pt 3 – Followup Thoughts

Over 100 GOP ex-lawmakers endorse Democrat opponent to Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback.

It’s a hard knock life for Sam Brownback, the Tea Party governor of Kansas.  He’s gotten to do everything the Tea Party has ever wanted: tax cuts on top of tax cuts (especially for the rich), spending cuts (especially with education), and pretty much everything else in the Tea Party playbook.  How’s it working out?  [Read More…]

Head of NOM doesn’t like Obama’s executive order either.

Brian Brown, the head of the National Organization for Marriage (a hate group), doesn’t care for Obama’s executive order either, and he’s got all kinds of doom-sayin’ ready to go, almost all of which has no bearing on the actual executive order.  But it sure sounds scary.  Booooooooo!  (H/T to Joe My God): “The fact [Read More…]

Bryan Fischer is not happy about Obama’s equality order.

Bryan Fischer took to twitter to express his outrage about Obama’s anti-discrimination order which prohibits companies that work for the federal government from discriminating against gay people.  Apparently if you don’t let Christians discriminate against gay people, you’re oppressing the Christians. Sexual deviancy?  Deviant in regards to what?  How Bryan Fischer thinks people should have [Read More…]

Two Syrian women stoned to death for adultery.

In Syria two women have been stoned to death for “adultery.”  Bear in mind, in one case adultery was “not being a virgin.” In separate incidents in a span of 24 hours, the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) carried out executions against two woman in Syria, sentencing them to death by stoning over [Read More…]

Family Research Council not happy with Obama’s anti-discrimination order.

I’ll just post the FRC’s press release about the executive order Obama signed today forbidding companies who work for the federal government from discriminating against LGBT people.  My thoughts, as I read the release are in red: Today, President Obama issued an Executive Order mandating that all federal contractors and subcontractors grant special treatment to [Read More…]

Pro-life nurse who refuses to dispense birth control sues family planning group for not hiring her.

This is the pinnacle of stupidity: In an email exchange with Chad Lindsey, the human resources director of TFHC, Hellwege was asked about her membership in the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and asked her if her beliefs would prevent her from working there. Hellwege said that while she would be able to “counsel” [Read More…]
