I never really thought much of this story of Balaam beating his talking ass (Numbers 22:21-35). Sure – I could recite the standard apologist retorts, but in all honesty, to me, it was always just another unnecessary allegory involving a talking animal; just like any other fable or fairy tale found outside “sacred” texts. In fact, I wasn’t even going to bother with the story until I received the following email:
“There is no question that the donkey actually spoke to Balaam. God is using this story to illustrate that animals have consciousness and the ability to reason. If God gave the power of speech, He also gave the power to reason because it carried on a two-way rational conversation with Balaam. The story proves that animals have souls and they will be in heaven with us! This is a great comfort to those of us who love our pets.” – Allison
“Do you mind if I ask you a follow-up question? Why don’t we see more evangelism being directed toward animals, then? Have you been able to lead your own pets to accept Jesus Christ as their lord and savior? Or, are they not required to accept the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal savior in order to make it to heaven? If not, why the free pass? (Please accompany all of your answers with Biblical references.)” – Horus
Allison never wrote back. Of course, to me, the impressive thing about this story is how the absurdity of a talking animal suddenly makes a sword-wielding talking angel that materializes out of thin air seem completely plausible! No questions asked.
