Civil rights activist Dolores Huerta claimed that Bernie Sanders supporters shouted “English Only” during a Nevada caucus event when she attempted a Spanish translation. Her claim on Twitter went viral and was eventually picked up by mainstream media including CNN.
The problem is that this claim is completely false. According to Snopes, Huerta claimed that the “Bernie people” were on one side of the room and that’s how she knew it was them yelling at her. Susan Sarandon was at the caucus event in question and shared a video on Twitter that showed exactly zero people chanting “English only” at Dolores when she claimed it happened. A moderator did ask for “English only” when no neutral translator could be found.
I always try to give people the benefit of the doubt, but it really looks like Dolores Huerta, who is a strong Hilary Clinton supporter, was caught in a lie here. At best, she is exaggerating that some people were concerned about the neutrality of the translator. However, it’s clear from the video shared above that there was no massive angry anti-Spanish mob as some reports made it seem. As of the time of this post, I’m still waiting for the mainstream news to report that Huerta’s claims were actually false.
