Before I get to my list, I’d like to briefly go over what GMOs actually are. GMOs (genetically modified organisms) “are the result of a laboratory process where genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially forced into the genes of an unrelated plant or animal.” For thousands of years farmers have artificially selected the best crops they want to continue growing, but now we can do that in the lab! (For a quick overview of GMOs, watch this!). This can sound a little scary and leads to some misinformation.
The majority (57%) of Americans believe that Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are generally unsafe to eat according to a recent Pew Research Center poll. There have also been nearly 35,000 products who have signed up to be on the non-GMO Project, an initiative to make sure foods do not contain GMOs. Bernie Sanders has recently been fighting for a bill in Vermont to make sure there is mandatory labeling for GMOs for all food. Clearly, people are concerned about GMOs, but should they be? Here are five reasons why you shouldn’t be against GMOs, but actually love them:
