Mike Pence holds some very anti-science beliefs and he also wants some of them to be taught in schools. In the video below, you can see Pence fighting for the teaching of “Intelligent Design” in schools. Here is an excerpt from his speech:
“I believe that God created the known universe, the earth and everything in it, including man. “And I also believe that someday scientists will come to see that only the theory of intelligent design provides even a remotely rational explanation for the known universe.”
“I would simply and humbly ask, can we teach it as such and can we also consider teaching other theories of the origin of species? “Like the theory that was believed in by every signer of the Declaration of Independence. Every signer of the Declaration of Independence believed that men and women were created and were endowed by that same Creator with certain unalienable rights. The Bible tells us that God created man in his own image, male and female. He created them.”
Evolution doesn’t just have scientific consensus, it’s the foundation for the entire field of biology. To dismiss such an important area of knowledge is ridiculous and certainly won’t help America’s depressing level scientific literacy.
But if that wasn’t bad enough, Pence also wants the government to fund gay conversion therapy. Seriously. In a former Pence campaign website, he stated:
“Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior.”
The Human Rights Campaign has explicitly condemned such “therapy”
“So-called “conversion therapy,” sometimes known as “reparative therapy,” is a range of dangerous and discredited practices that falsely claim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity or expression. Such practices have been rejected by every mainstream medical and mental health organization for decades, but due to continuing discrimination and societal bias against LGBTQ people, some practitioners continue to conduct conversion therapy.”
Polifact reported that Pence hasn’t explicitly changed his position as recently as 2016:
“Our research found no evidence Pence has walked back his stance on public funding for conversion therapy. His spokesman did not respond with information about Pence’s current position.”
Pence has been very outspoken in his opposition to the LGBTQ community. If Trump becomes elected, Pence will likely have a lot of influence in policy and that is absolutely terrifying. Thankfully, Trump Pence 2016 has only about a 13% chance of becoming reality.
