I’m personally not the biggest fan of Bill Maher, but I do appreciate that he shares a non-religious viewpoint with the general public. It is nice to see those with large platforms normalize atheism more, even though I think he can be quite misguided on other issues.
Anyway, it was really cool to see Maher interview Obama and talk about the lack of representation of atheists in Congress. However, it was disappointing to see Obama question the discrimination atheists face. Yes, atheism is something you can hide, but once you are open about it, you can face strong prejudice as studies show that atheists are viewed quite negatively in the United States. This can be especially problematic if you live in a more religious part of the country. Maher and Obama do agree that our country can do a much better job improving our education system though.
