Gay conversation therapy is simply atrocious. The idea that you can try to change someone’s sexuality is absurd and the idea of shaming people for completely natural sexual urges is abhorrent. Yet, this “therapy” has garnered too much support over the years, even including our very own current Vice President Mike Pence.
It would be great to see this ghastly practice abolished and that’s what legislators in Connecticut are trying to do. Representative Jeff Currey is one of the few LGBTQ members in congress. He also introduced a bill that would ban gay conversion therapy. In a recent press conference Currey stated:
“As a gay youth and as a gay adult for that matter, never was I broken nor needed to be fixed. Being gay is not a disease, therefore it does not require a cure.”
Other politicians voiced their support of the bill as well including Representative Matt Ritter:
“The American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the National Association of Social Workers and the American Psychological Association all support this bill”
Supporters of this bill discussed how harmful such “therapy” can be and how it is not backed up by science. Banning gay conversion therapy actually has some bi-partisan support so this bill could pass into a law. We’ll see if some good news can come from politics during these dark times.
